Every program is a scam and I can't really grasp how to update my drivers manually.
Drivers for what hardware?
Also, if you're on Windows 7, you can use Windows Update.

Don't update unless something's broken though...
there's a lot of applications doing this, but i can't think of one that's free...

You don't need any third party applications..
And because basically, it's "dangerous"
I've heard of people who had no issue with drivers for their motherboard, they updated just because they wanted to keep it up to date, I believe his computer then had an issue where it couldn't get past POST/BIOS.. in the end he rolled back to the old drivers

Sounds like a rare case, updating drivers usually works and optimizes hardware's performance...
