Looking to get a new phone, and the Samsung Activ S is now out. What's the general concensus on WP7/8?
Very good, but very little apps.
Eh, Windows Phone has always been not terrible, but the lack of apps and severely restrictive customization may annoy you. It's a super fun UI to use, but if you're on a contract, think of what you plan to accomplish in 2 years.
What I will say about Windows Phone is that they nailed the phone part pretty damn well. If you use facebook and text/call with any sort of frequency, you'll love what Windows Phone does with it all.
The experience is OK, It has good integration with a couple of services, but the ecosystem in general is really not very far along.
You'd be better off with iOS or Android if you're looking to use those apps people are talking about.
Well, if you're not that much into games, I'd say WP8 will be great for you. Even though there's not a lot you can customize, it brings a really solid experience without any fuss - there's some stuff that I find annoying, though, particularly that you have to work a bit to get new ringtones, though I don't know whether that changed from WP7 - I have my phone silenced at all times, though, but I imagine that it could be a problem for other people. As others have already said, it's pretty much all about being great at what a phone should do, not so good at what we earlier expected of handheld consoles. Other than, I'd probably get a Lumia 920 or an 8X instead, you get some extra goodies (and a better design, really).
I should probably mention that I really haven't found the app store lacking - sure, there's not SnapChat or whatever people are using right now, but overall I'd say the selection is good.
I rarely use apps and really only use phone, text, facebook, etc. Android is not for me, so next phone I'm getting is a WP8
Pretty much what everyone here has said. It's great, but if you're expecting to get all your apps that you had on an Android or iOS device, it's gonna be a struggle. But if you just want the basic stuff like a navigation app, social networking apps and there are some big named games on there, then you should be fine
