Orth retorted that "electricity goes out too," and that people still buy electronics.
Difference being that electronics need electricity to work, while single-player games don't need Internet to work. Nobody is complaining about multi-player games needing an Internet-connection.
Goddamn.
I don't know about you guys, but what I translated from all of that bullshit was "The new Xbox is going to require or heavily depend on an internet connection to play games."
Wait this guy is actually a director at microsoft? I saw the tweets but I thought it was just some random jackass
"I don't get the drama around having an 'always on' console," Orth said, adding "every device now is 'always on.' That's the world we live in." (Note: His tweets are now "protected" from public view.)
brb unplugging my UTP cable and playing some Bioshock: Infinite.
Good that I'm eyeing the PS4 then.
I have a W-LAN network in my home, but due to the way it's set up, none of my consoles can connect to it as it requires logging in in a browser (and the consoles won't even open the browser without a working internet connection).
Although kind of an exception in my case, there are tons of people out there who, even if they do have have internet, nwould have this and that problem connecting with their console.
Can't see this going anywhere good.
i saw these pictures before but i didn't know who this "Orth" guy was.
but oh shit he's the guy in charge of the xbox! time to grab the popcorn
Yeah he all but confirmed it
I've seen people commenting elsewhere about how PC is no better because Steam needs to be on-line to work.
My sides.
Man, if Xbox requires an internet connection in anyway to play single player games, either constantly or just to start them up, I'm going to laugh at their presentation.
Sadly, I could see Microsoft getting away with it. Lots of Xbox fans will probably end up buying it due to brand loyalty.
I'm very worried that he still hasn't outright denied it.

Another reason to just keep my Xbox 360.
With the rumors that it's going to disable pre-owned games and this "internet dependent" thing, it's just not worth getting for me. I don't have money to pull out of my ass to buy 40-60 dollar games constantly, and I like finding older games from the original Xbox to play on my Xbox 360.
Yeah man I don't see the drama, just grab a bucket of internet from the internet lake and fill your internet tank up.
I'll stick with my old modded original xbox now, I won't be getting anything from micro$oft in a while.
WHY do I have a sneaking suspicion this guy doesn't actually work for Microsoft, but is their attempt at being Microsoft's version of Kevin Butler? And whoever thought this was a good idea also thought it would be swell to try and start an "Everything should be always on" meme/fad/whatever?
You know there is a lot of middle ground between a console being "always on" in terms of power or internet connectivity, and require internet to be used in any way.
That's where this whole rumor started, when vgleaks got the supposed specs for the Durango, it stated that the console would have more than one power level so that it could be "on" but not in use, like a computer in sleep mode. It also said that in this state it would retain a connection to the internet so it can update itself when in said state.
And then people started screaming about always-on DRM and then Kotaku ran some articles siting anonymous sources, and then other sites ran some articles based entirely on Kotaku's shit, and now the people who helped perpetuate the rumor are believing it because of these articles.
Gaming journalism is a vicious cycle.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure this Orth guy is just stupid as shit.

Unless the next Xbox does not allowed used games, will not allow game transfer and it forces you to create a new account as it does not aupport your old 360 account. I bet it might just do that
beyond unprofessional

I can only assume you're kidding because of the question marks, but you can never know with facepunch.

90% of people who have an xbox aren't crying their eyes out about being connected to the internet, sorry that you think people care about dumb things like that.
i hope the first question at E3 is "does it have always on internet connection, and why did you ignore the internet if it does", then i hope the second question is a slightly longer phrasing of the first question
[editline]7th April 2013[/editline]
but truely nobody has confirmed this in anyway other than a durango build

The Xbox I have was connected to the Internet once before I moved it to somewhere I could use it.
Well, my internet is... Wonky, at best. I most certainly would hate to have always-online bullshit for the entire friggin' console.

Source on this apparent number of users who dont care?
