Damn, that was fast.
Thanks for buying your way into the competitive scene before getting fucking 60 tickrate working, Blizzard. That sure won't hurt your game at all.
It wont and you know it
In the competitive scene it would, just look what happened with evolve. WarOwl already did a video on Overwatch and how it isn't competitively viable in its current state.
oh boy another shitty forced esports scene. how exciting. instead of making a competitively sound game and watch as the scene develops from the players, why not just throw money at it instead?
there's not even a proper spectator mode right now, watching it live is a mess because of this is this actually blizzard though, I don't think they're sponsoring it
there's not even a proper spectator mode right now, watching it live is a mess because of this is this actually blizzard though, I don't think they're sponsoring it
i remember for early LoL they had a really ghetto spectator client where one side had a 6th player who was the spectator and they had a custom ability that allowed them to see through fog of war. It was a really hack-y spectator mode but this was like 2010. I don't know why a game in 2016 like Overwatch doesn't have a spectator mode.
Blizzard didn't even try to make a competitive game and it's extremely obvious if you have actually played the game because although it is really fun, it's casual as fuck. The community has been trying to make it competitive and an esport since before the game was even out and it makes no sense why. This is the opposite of what happened with Evolve.
there's not even a proper spectator mode right now, watching it live is a mess because of this is this actually blizzard though, I don't think they're sponsoring it
The gimped spectator mode was done on purpose to prevent friends from spectating with a party and giving out vital info, if you'd have watched any recent overwatch tournies you would have seen a fully functional spectator mode. Unfortunately you are right though in that they don't have a kind of live spectating mode like CSGO does, but expecting that from launch is kind of optimistic considering it took CSGO a long while to implement it. Also yes, custom hosted matches (which is what all the tournaments use) have an optional 'high-bandwidth' switch that changes it to 60 tick.
In the competitive scene it would, just look what happened with evolve. WarOwl already did a video on Overwatch and how it isn't competitively viable in its current state.
Evolve was a completely different situation and basically a completely different game, Overwatch already has what, 7 million players? I've watched tons of pros play personally and they have a blast, they aren't screaming 'ARGGHH 20 TICK!!!' because death in the game is really no big deal at all, nor is getting those sick 360 noscope widowmaker picks. The game is significantly more casual than say CSGO or even Evolve, and as it stands right now you don't need those frame perfect headshots to make or break a match.
which is funny because 60 tick is pretty low as well. and I think csgo had a working spectator mode that could watch live games on launch?
It was heavily restricted just like overwatches system is, I was talking about the linked casters, intentional delay, and other advanced features specifically for e-sports live casting and making spectating fair.

CSGO wasn't popular as an esport at first.
CSGO wasn't popular as an esport at first.
Its funny people bitching about them 'buying' their way into e-sports when thats precisely what basically every e-sport title did anyways, including CSGO. CSGO was literally a ghost town until valve decided to implement their money printing scheme (skins and trading) and inject shitloads of cash into official tournies.
because they didnt do it right as the game was released. dota 2 was a special case because they already had dota 1. league of legends didnt start churning out tournaments as the game came out. they let a big community build up, they let the game be balanced, before they did any of that stuff. they're totally different from a game that was just released a few weeks ago having a 6 figure tournament out of nothing, just to force a scene.
They already have a huge community, and they've already gone through what, two or three 10-15k tournies with teams like Cloud9 and Liquid? Those all went well and lessons were learned (namely the new 1 hero limit rule) and theres already like two more 15k tournaments coming up. I can't speak for everyone but I personally loved watching those games, they were a great show. The game's e-sports scene is already alive and well, it isnt being forced if its already there. You have to remember that this isn't some niche game, its a Blizzard game with the full backing of their stellar advertising team and their huge reputation, simply put they have ALOT more weight to throw around than Valve or Riot ever did.
Lobby games are 60Hz
But it's bugged. From what I've heard even tournaments aren't using the option because it just causes the game not to work.
Oh boy can't wait to see 2 zarya 2 mcree and 2 Lucio on both sides
None of these tournaments are hosted by blizzard so I don't understand why people think blizzard is trying to buy their way into the competitive scene. They are most likely planning something big for blizzcon like they did with HotS. Hopefully that gives them plenty of time to work on some of the issues that people have with it currently.

Same as CSGO/DOTA majors aren't hosted by Valve and are outsourced to ESL/Dreamhack.

Reason why I think this specific ESL event isn't outsourced by blizzard and just ESL getting in on the cash pool themselves is because of two reasons. First blizzard hasn't done any major advertising for the event and Secondly the prize pool is so small. Events hosted by blizzard for HotS have a larger prize pool and the Overwatch fanbase is WAY bigger than it.
