This is quite a complicated issue I'm having, but I hope I am able to adequately explain it.
I have Windows and a few basic programs like Skype installed on an SSD, all of my games are installed on a standard 2TB hard drive. Sometimes, after my PC has been running for a few hours this will happen: I'm playing CS:GO, while I'm dead I will alt-tab and do some other stuff using programs installed on the SSD. The program will completely lock up, followed by Windows... however I can hear and see the game still running in the background but I am unable to switch back to it. What I think has happened is that the drive has crashed but basic stuff required for the OS to continue running is stored in my RAM, as I am unable to do anything I reboot my computer and get a message saying "A disk read error occured. Press ctrl-alt-del to restart.", which continues to happen when I reboot. If I leave my computer turned off for a while then boot it later the problem has gone away... for a while.
I replaced my SSD and tried using a different SATA port, can anyone help me out? Is my motherboard possibly the problem here? I plan to spend a lot of money building a new computer next year so I don't really wanna put money into this one, I've already spent money on a new drive which has been a waste.
As far back as I can remember (the mid 90s at least), full screen games have never tolerated being alt+tabbed out to the background well. Try running the games in windowed mode if possible if you plan on doing other things at the same time.
As for the "disk read error", do you have any USB flash drives or external drives plugged into the machine?
