Okay so yesterday one of my friends came over with his motorcycle and letting people try it. After watching one of my othet friends somewhat successfully ride it i wanted to try it out. So my friend asked me if i wanted to try it and said ok. Since ive never even been on a motorcycle before he had to show me everthing and how to ride it. So after 10 minutes of him explaining i went on it and tried to go very slow. Before i could react the bike sped up really fast and i jammed on the front brakes and flew forward off the bike landing on the sidewalk hard and spraining my shouler badly and scraping my arm. When this happened the bike slid along the curb and got damaged. I had to go to the hospital for 5 hours just to make sure everything was ok and luckily it was. My friend got thr bike damage assesed today and apparently it will cost 2000 dollars to fix and he is blaming me for everything when my argument is that he shouldnt have let an inexperienced driver without a motorcycle licence ride his bike. He isnt reporting it to his insurance because obviously he doesnt want his rates to go up and pay more monthly. I feel bad because i did crash his bike and he is a friend so obviously i want this to end positively...what should i do??
He did obviously know you had no idea what the hell you were doing, and you weren't insistent on riding it (according to your side of the story), HE asked YOU. I don't see any reason why you should take the blame.
If you knew you couldn't drive it, you should have never accepted to take it for a ride in the first place.
If either of you can't come to some sort of consensus and he wants you to pay (which you should), ask him if you can pay him in payments.
Well its his fault for letting an inexperienced driver on but its also your fault for getting on and trying to ride it and clearly not doing what he told you. I would suggest trying to pay it 50/50, say that its his fault for letting you on but its your fault for not starting off correctly.
I'd say his, he knew that you couldn't ride it and even if you constantly asked to have a go he should have refused no matter what, really.
you're both at fault; split it
Get some more assessments, and make sure you're there when he does it. Then split the cost.
yeah well I've just been thinking that if i had let someone without a car licence drive my car and they end up crashing it, no matter how much instruction i give them on how to drive it they are still not licensed to drive the vehicle. So in that situation i would pay for it. Isn't that the exact situation here?
You're both at fault, him for allowing a rider with zero experience, and you for doing do knowing you had no idea what you were doing.

Stupid question but why have insurance at all if you are too scared to use it?
Stupid question but why have insurance at all if you are too scared to use it?
i agree entirely. He just doesn't want to use it because he will have to pay more

Probably because he let an unlicensed person take his bike for a spin. Insurance company isn't going to like that.
And if he did involve the insurance company, he'd probably end up spending more from deductible + upped premiums.

Oh and to OP. I'd say it's more your fault. He's an idiot for letting you ride but YOU are the one that fucked up.

And he allowed him to fuck up. It is his bike, and you can know shit will hit the fan if he let someone inexperienced ride on it. Al tough OP was stupid enough to ride on it.
Both their faults; they should split the 2k.
Both parties are retarded
50/50
My dog is at fault.
yeah the bike is a 2001 model and he got it for 4500....so obviously putting 2100 into the bike makes no sense
"I'm going to have my friends, who have never been on a motorcycle before, ride my motorcycle today. I hope none of them crash."
He should have been prepared.
Maybe you should pay half, just so you don't have to hear him bitch about it, and so you don't lose your friendship.
i would probably say pay half, but 2000$ for some slides on a curb, cmon seems a little much, do you know how badly it was damaged? because it sounds like he took it to a dealership which would naturaly charge the most
yes he did. the bike still runs perfectly fine. He's so concerned about the resale value of it...thats his main argument. He's saying that it scratched the front panel or cowl and it scratched through the sticker which he said is 'irreplaceable' unless we get the 800 dollar part. he's saying that if he tries to resell it someone is going to look at it and know its been dropped and not even bother looking further at it. He's be leasically assuming that I'm paying for the whole thing and I'm saying i have no money and my parents are my financial go to's. My dad obviously doesn't want to pay anything because he thinks he shouldn't have let an unlicensed driver on his bike and wants to talk to more people on it and figure out the correct actions to take so we don't get screwed. My friend is saying he doesn't want to get his dad involved or his insurance involved at all because then his dad will know since he pays for his bike insurance and he will get pissed off as he already has his hands full with other court cases since his parents are getting divorced or something.
Oh fuck! Not the sticker...
Uh what kind of bike are we talking about? I've lent my dirt bike to friends that have dropped it and honestly never done anything too bad that would hurt the resale. My road bike on the other hand, I would never lend it to someone that was inexperienced.

Its a 2001 Honda...I don't know the exact model but he hasn't told me yet but it is a smaller motorcycle from what i can see. Its something like a 600F4i
Er if he lent you a 600cc sports bike for your first time then he was just asking for it in my opinion.
Sounds like 99% of the damage is all cosmetic anyway.

It mostly is. Like i said before he's pissed because if he tries to sell it someone will take one look at the bike and know its been dropped
All thats damaged for the most part is the lower right fairing and the front fairing. Im looking at parts on ebay that fit the bike and are a lot cheaper than what honda charges....does it cost that much to paint new parts to match the existing parts and are they reliable?
Complete sticker kits OEM and aftermarket tend to run between $100-140. He's obviously bullshitting with the "irreplaceable" mumbo jumbo as the plastic can easily be fixed with the right skill applied.
This is one of the reasons i dont like street bikes. Too heavy for a begginer, Too much power for a begginer, and too much repair costs if you drop it.
He does know that for every foot away from a dealership the resale value falls by like 100$
[editline]12th September 2012[/editline]
Wait its a 2001 honda... The resale value on it is probably all of 5,000 anyway, nobody wants a 12 year old bike for face value
In the long run, sounds like your friend is a bit of a douch trying to charge you 2000

He told me he got it for 4500$ 3 or 4 years ago. He said he's put 2000$ of stuff into the bike but that could mean anything as far as I'm concerned like repairs and maintenance. Im just pissed because he's putting all the blame on me when he's the one who asked if i wanted to ride his bike and i never had a license in the first place.
when were u when bike die???
Yeah putting new parts on an 11 year old bike just doesn't seem proper and i should have been more clear that were not really friends. He's just close friends with one of my housemates and he's was a nice guy.
