• DSL and Phone Problems - Frequently Disconnecting
    2 replies, posted
I have Verizon DSL and I have been using it for years. I never had this problem before, and it just started happening within the past week. My phone will ring as if someone is calling, but it does less than one ring before it disconnects (which especially sucks because I'm waiting for a potential employer to call). When this happens, my internet goes down completely. Today, it started disconnecting randomly without the phone calls. When a call would come in, the same things would happen with the short ring. However, my DSL keeps going out all through the day randomly. I have no idea what's going on. I checked all of my phone connections and they all have their DSL filters attached. I know it's not my PC because the internet disappears on my laptop as well. I've had my router since I got my DSL which was about 4-5 years ago, and it never gave me a problem like this. I have no idea what to do, and Google results for this problem date back to 2004 and are generally unhelpful.
For whatever reason those phone filters are prone to malfunction sometimes. You can call your ISP and they should be able to remotely test the filters. They should also test your line stats including the signal noise ratio, there might be a physical problem with the line before it actually reaches your home.
Alright, I'll give Verizon a call tomorrow to see what they say. Hopefully it's not bad enough where they have to come out and physically fix the line, they're terribly slow at maintenance.
