Developers should stop calling their Public tests "alphas" just becase they want to dodge criticism.
This game is CLEARY long over the alpha-phase.

More like developers seem to vary in terms of what they believe are alpha or beta tests of their games. I mean; the evolve alpha was quite different to the evolve beta. Same with destiny. It's just to get fan feedback earlier in the dev process

Fair enough, but I also disagree with the Evolve-Alpha being an alpha. Call it Beta and Beta2, or Beta and RC1 or something. If I hear alpha I imagine being able to SEE that it's alpha, like with Unreal Tournament right now, unfinished areas, far from feature complete and stuff.
Evolves Alpha was pretty much the feature complete game minus DLC stuff, with all the Day1 DLCs I don't even know what's part of the Base Game and what's part of an Expansion.
I realize development got a bit more complicated now with DLC-Content Production during the initial development of the game, but let's not pretend that they did NOT call it an alpha just to save face.
Who cares if they call is an alpha or a beta? It really doesn't make any difference how buggy it is because you're not paying for it. Look at the Battlefield 3 pre-order beta for example. It was playable like just a few weeks before launch and it was buggy as fuck but was pretty much perfect at launch if I recall. I can remember a bunch of people crying over the beta and cancelling preorders even though the devs specifically said the beta was to stress test servers.
Also, I really hope they stop turning people into bullet sponges like in Vegas. I just replayed Raven Shield a couple weeks ago and the tension in clearing rooms is insane because you know when you open a door, within about a quarter of a second, either you or the guy on the other side was about to die. It wasn't just about who could spray more bullets in the other guy's direction the fastest. It was about careful aim.
I really hope they won't fuck up on this game. R6 is great, this looks great but i'm worried they'll push their shitty atrocious DLCand horrible uPlay servers onto it forcing everyone to stop playing..
I signed up at 8am yesterday, still no email or anything.
Also my CPU doesn't actually fit the requirements, because AMD never get a look in, but it should be overclocked enough to work just about.
it really bugs me when im playing a closed alpha and there isn't a bunch of missing/placeholder shit
a certain squeenix game in alpha atm has tons of placeholders and its hilarious when you play it, makes you actually want to report bugs and shit
They stopped doing it because devs were getting a lot of bad press for public closed alphas that were actual alphas.
Well of course you guys haven't gotten anything yet if you've registered.
There's not even been a date set. This is just pre-emptive.

The problem is actually with the people "testing" the games. For some reason people expect the beta to be super polished and then kick off about various bugs they find. Though it won't be long before people expect the same from alphas.
I had no idea this was a thing. Hope it turns out well. Would hate to see it end up like Ghost recon: Phantoms.

It's called an alpha but it has to look extremely polished because people misinterpret it as the final product, and consequentially won't buy it because it's "unfinished". And before you say, "It's an alpha. People should expect that," remember that people are idiots and do it anyway.

That said, I'm really cautiously optimistic about this game. I really hope it's good. I've never played a Rainbow Six before, but watching their demo on E3 a while back and gameplay really interested me. I really hope Ubisoft doesn't fuck it up.
How the meaning of alpha has changed. Remember the hl2 leak? that was beta and most maps still had orange dev textures.
These days alpha is more like a demo, it's usually very close to the final product
The HL2 leak wasn't supposed to be seen by the public, so Valve didn't care about it being unfinished.

Actually, the leak had stuff collected from many periods of time. "Beta" is just used for the sake of convenience, same as "leak," because it wasn't leaked, it was stolen.

That's not how it works internally. There's a big difference between internal Alphas/betas, and consumer Alpha/betas.

The Half Life 2 leak was neither a leak nor a beta. It was a cobbled together compilation of half finished levels stolen over a number of months/years.
Alpha means the product isn't feature complete, planned features have not been implemented yet. If Siege comes out and there are planned systems that weren't implemented when this comes out then it is an alpha.
Beta means the product is feature complete but is still unfinished, all the planned shit is in but probably broken in some way. That's not to say that new features can't be added, it just means planned features haven't been included (because that would be impossible).
You can have a very late alpha with a lot of polish, but if there are planned features that aren't scrapped or delayed that aren't in it is an alpha, it doesn't prevent other areas from being polished.
