A legitimate question for which I don't have the answer to. You see I usually play with a group of friends and when we have our daily playtimes we often use Skype. Now, while not the best program to use memory-wise we've had few problems with it however some members of our little group are interested in a alternative which I responded to by proposing that we should use Discord while they were leaning towards TS.
So to put an end to this I ask you, my dear dysfunctional internet family which may or may not be a hivemind, is Discord the better choice?
It's missing "No, other alternative"
because Mumble is seriously good
fuck yeah man discord is the shit
Discord is superior to everything else IMO. You can setup your own server/channel and make it mimic how Skype and Teamspeak works. (Like force people to use push to talk etcetera.) Plus, the codec used in Discord is much better than the codec used in Skype.
Discord is basically an upgraded version of IRC that has built in voice-chat.
Discord is far more convenient compared to other applications I have used in the past.
Skype's trash. TS3 is great. I'd love to use discord more but my friends dont use it and cba to switch
Teamspeak has an old ugly interface. Discord is nice, clean, and very simple and easy to use. Plus it works on all operating systems and even has phone app support.
Discord is great, it works in-browser and on Desktop seamlessly and allows for guest users
[editline]16th March 2016[/editline]
it works on mobile as well
Mumble looks like a teamspeak skin tbh
Discord is good for casual groups and for people who don't really care and just want somewhere to talk like a small discussion board with voip tacked on.
TS is more for direct voip and doesn't rely on 3rd party servers you have no control over.
If the discord servers go down, so does your service.
TS you have much more control over it as you can host your own servers, physically, not some rent bullshit like discord has, also has more audio codecs compared to discord meaning you can make it use bandwidth more effectively.
Personally for voip work, TS > All.

If you want old and ugly, go look at ventrilo, it hasn't been updated since 2008.
Well you know discord and ts kinda fit a niche. Discord is fucking great for people who just wanna talk trash on the fly it literally takes 1 step to set it up after you went to the site unlike ts. Ts is better for people who want more control over the program but quality wise they're more or less the same. I just find it fucking impressive that discord managed to keep this kind of quality in a browser based application. Skype is just trash because the only niche it fits is the broken-ass program that disconnects you at random and its quality will shit itself whenever it wants.
skype sucks shit for anything other than one-on-one conversations. teamspeak owns because you can be a channel commander. i have never used discord but if i can't make my transmission icon orange it probably is bad
Discord is super good. My only problem with Mumble is that the server we rent gets DDOS'd every now and again. :v:
The clan i'm in on grp uses Ts, I gotta say I love it.

"What's that? One of the two people who started the call left? Better close the entire call"
also: Mumble is best. Open source, good quality, good options for transmitting and admin, and no bullshit.
I love the full control I have in TeamSpeak and I will stay loyal to it. The right system might be confusing for new people but it is just so powerful.
Reagy mentioned it already, I also prefer that I have control over the physical server and that I am not depending on Discord them self if their service is running or not.
Personal experience:
I administrate a TS server for about 60 people, it just works and the rights system of channels and users makes it easy to setup special areas and permissions for different people. It works very well for its purpose of being a solid voice communication software, since we also have a website and forum for the other things.
I also moderate a Discord Server for a medium sized twitch community. Probably a bit bigger than the TS. For that case it works better since Discord is more like a chatroom, voice is rarely used outside of some stream activities which turns Discord in some sort of Forum. Even the owner usually uses TS for voice stuff most of the time.
About Skype, I just use it for personal chat and 2 group chats. It is mostly for close friends and important contacts. Skype P2P voice is horrible.
tl;dr: TS/Vent/Mumble > Discord
Overall I have a strong dislike for Discord, they forced them self pretty hard and aggressive in the market with partnership deals all over Twitch etc. (Anybody remembered how RaidCall went.) Then there was the problem with their former privacy policy that took them almost a year to fix. I also still think their front page comparison table is misleading and leaves out certain information on purpose. Yea it has some good things, modern interface, integration with services and multiplatform support but there is just this weird feeling with them, maybe its just me who grew up with TS and the others.
Discord isn't seriously trying to compete with Teamspeak though. It's competing for the kind of people who can't figure out how to host their own Teamspeak server or can't afford (or don't want) to pay for a rental. They're the sort of people who set up Skype group calls. For them, Discord is perfect because it's essentially the same thing but not garbage.
But Teamspeak isn't going to die just because of Discord. Teamspeak's far better for people who want to micromanage their own server. Discord is a great program but it's not really useful unless your priority is being able to quickly invite people to the server and talk to them (because, well, that's pretty much all it does). If you want power user features, it's just not going to cut it.
For OP - if you're using Skype now, just use Discord. It's free and does what you already do, just better. Just saying that if you already use Teamspeak, there's no point switching to Discord.

Mumble is kind of neat. I liked the server customization available on it (especially subchannels and shit like that) but the UI was shitty when we tested it (about a year ago) and people had a lot of problems with audio for some reason. We used the same codec but a lot of people sounded like they had bad reverb and compression. It was too buggy to use.
I haven't been able to join any group calls since the new update, and this group constantly has people unable to join calls until they restart their PC or they can't talk if the host has their microphone muted when they join. Skype needs to die.
Me and my group really like Curse voice and recommend others try it. However, the last alpha update made it much more similar to discord, which is slightly annoying.
I love and will vouch for mumble it's just great overall.
I personally enjoy Discord for hanging out and gaming over that shitstain called Skype. Only reason I use Skype now is for family and friends off Steam.
Another vouch for mumble. Had my server for almost 3 years now with basically no complaints.
I use skype only because discord stops letting me hear everyone in the channel during loading screens and low FPS areas.
If someone has a fix for that that doesn't involve the words "New computer" I'd love to hear it.
Discord is really good for subreddit talk. What I use it for, or to stay in touch with a certain fanbase.
Discord it pretty good, but can you make discord look like it's from windows 2000 and have the font as comic sans?

But to be honest discord is mostly better, all it's missing is a webcam thing and then skype can go fuck itself.
I like both, Discord and Teamspeak/Mumble.
Discord is great because chatting is much simpler and nicer to read. Teamspeak is great for creating sub-channels, voicing and server management.
Apparently, Discord gets more features monthly or so. Having screen-sharing in a later Discord update makes Skype completely obsolete for me.
Discord is better for functionality, Skype only because I'm kind of stuck with it as that's what everyone I talk to normally uses.
Lots of buddies have gone to Discord and well, currently we use that and especially with the bitrate update we have a pretty good voice quality now as well.
I wanted to try Discord for a while but I can't get any of my friends to switch over. They always insist on using ts3 or fucking Skype
