Good cheap laptops? I don't know shit about laptops.

Alright, so I've never owned a laptop in my life so I have no clue what to look for, any suggestions?
What should I be looking for in a laptop, any brands that are better than others? Will I still be able to get a good one for a cheap-ish price?
Are custom builts one bad/good/expensiveasshit?
I've looked at some laptop and I'm confused because they're processors I haven't really hard of since they're usually some sort of laptop variant of a desktop processor.
That kind of stuff, I just need to educate myself on laptops because I'd like to buy one to do a bit of gaming and do music and other creative shit outside of my room.
My budget would probably be 400-500 at the very very most.
As for games, the most taxing game I would be playing on this laptop that I can think of since I don't really want a big gaming laptop would probably be World of Warcraft.
400-500 what?
Sausages?
It would help if we knew what country you are in.
Haven't thought of that, it would be 500 maple syrup, USD also works since the difference between both isn't big so budget of 400-500 CAD/USD.
Go with whatever you can find with a HD 4000. The laptops appear to be a little more expensive in canada, but this one looks great

HP (and Dell) consumer line laptops are garbage.
The dedicated cards in the price range perform very closely to the HD4000, I would just go with the HD4000.

This one definitely looks like a nice pick, I'll have to save a little bit more but I'll save it in my bookmarks.
There's a cheaper one, but it's out of stock. I'm trying to check NCIX but the website is so bad, it's like it was made in the 90s.
Haha holy shit, just checked the NCIX website and it looks like a polished 90s website.
Yeah you are not getting much better than a HD4000 on that budget, But that will run WOW without a hitch.
If you want any kind of dedicated graphics card you need around 600$
See what the HD4000 can do:

The HD4000 isn't actually too bad, it's not like I'll be playing high end games, I've got my actual computer for that, it's just when I want to get creative or really god damned want to get out of my room but still do stuff on the computer or game casually outside my room.
If you want one that will last forever, then go Lenevo.

I'll be going with either this one or the one Shadaez posted.

My Dell studio 15 has held up to 4 years of constant misuse and abuse. It went with me every day to college for 2 years and for the past 2 years it has been used twice weekly to control a digital mixer when I do live mixing.
Yeah, The battery no longer holds much charge (~40 minutes), there's a key missing from the keyboard and the ethernet port is missing from when I fell off a desk with a lead plugged in, but the entire thing still continues to function without fault and probably still has a few years left in it. The HDD reports a power on time of 16416 Hours (1.8 years).
My experience has been positive and I won't hesitate to buy a Dell again. Especially if I can get a similar deal again. I got this one during a back-to-school sale and also used a coupon code, bringing the price below products from competitors.

The others are still good, but on par with the likes of Asus,Sony,Sager, etc.

Acer laptops fall to pieces as soon as they come out of the box.
They're improving, I know someone with an Aspire V3 and it's a lot sturdier than the other Acers I've had to deal with.
Even my HP G6 is sturdier than an acer.
My asus's cardboard box is sturdier than alot of acers.

I would agree with you that the Dell Studio's are great. Or were. They were a one off, dell hasn't done much good since then. The only reason to get a Dell laptop is if you're getting one of their business models.
