I'm happy that it is being successful I met some of the Devs at the New York comic con when they announced Skylanders
I didn't expect this. Good on them.
While I'm not interested in these games, I'm glad there doing good.
Oh
its THIS series
The motherfuckers who ruined spyro forever

what is that, that's not Spyro.. D:
I think its best not to look at this series as spyro. Because it isnt.
That's actually surprising. I remember seeing an advert for it on TV and thinking it looked gimmicky and I watched a Giant Bomb quick look at Skylanders Giants and well it looks cool but that's pretty good.
Although i hate what they did to Spyro's looks,I'm kind of happy.
It's quite unique and looks interesting with all those figurines and stuff.
They really hit the spot with this series, it targets a perfect audience. Young adolescents and kids, the mixture of figures and game is perfect. Besides parents will surely buy those things for them. Seems like a great deal for EA or Activision or whatever the devs are.
Anyway, a friend of mine plays with them even though he is 22 :v:
Isn't this the game with £100 of DLC on launch?
Isn't this the game with £100 of DLC on launch?
Probably, it's Activision.
The "DLC", the toys, are for kids, mostly. As is the game.
So don't think of it as DLC, and if you do, it's leagues better than say CoD, where you pay 15 dollars for 3 virtual maps that can't be carried over into next year's game, yet with these figures, they are compatible with all future releases, kids can play with them psychically, and they look nice on a shelf.

Spyro was dead after the third game anyway, so who cares
I saw one of my little cousins playing Skylanders when I went to visit for Thanksgiving. It was the first time I had heard of it. We ended up buying him a character three-pack for Christmas, which cost $25. It's an absurd price, but I have to admit it's pretty clever.
I feel old with not understanding the hip, new things kids are into.

I also realized that in 10-15 years, you're gonna have kids going "remember this Skylander character? This shit was my childhood!"
Ha holy shit I totally forgot this was a spyro game! All I thought was skylanders

I met someone who works on skylanders and I joked, "oh your the people who killed spyro"
his response, "Where the ones that brought it back from the dead"
From what I was told, they were the only people who cared about spyro who could use the IP.
I have more respect for the devs behind this game then CoD is now. The ones I've met arn't ignorant, they know Skylanders isn't the same feel as the original spyro and if they started making a spyro platformer on a small whim they know they can't capture the same feel if they choose that path. They wouldn't want to milk it like sonic.
Also they would love to make a platformer in the classic style that people missed and give it AAA funding, but only if publisher would give them that big amount of funding. And this is activision which even though gives skylanders more freedom then other devs, they won't hand over the money unless platformers are popular again.
To be fair, the 3DS versions of the game pay the most homage to classic spyro, and even to Crash Bandicoot(Remember how 1-3 played? That's how Skylanders 3DS plays)
Honestly apart from the Spyro shenanigans it's a pretty cool idea. Good for them.
EDIT:
Wait they actually charge for the game? Fuck that then.
Probably did so well because in order to actually play the entirety of the game you bought you gotta buy a bunch of those little figures, and those things aren't cheap at all.
People flip a bitch when games have minor Day 1 DLC, why aren't people freaking the fuck out that the entire game is based around DLC that's on the disk and totals up to fucking insane amounts of money if you wish to access the whole product you bought?
[editline]11th January 2013[/editline]
Probably helps that it's marketed to just kids as well. My little brother got it for his birthday and now he is going to spend a shitload of money buying all those little figures so he can actually play the game he just got.
I've never even heard of this, but it's neat that everything Activision touches turns to gold.
This is a Spyro game? I had no idea. Is Spyro just a playable character or is he even important to the story of it?

You are missing the point though
Skylanders is good because they meld an actually rather decent diablo clone with a childrens toy
The figures are expensive because they are pretty good quality figurines and they act as more than just "DLC", they are also acting as a toy
This is why places like Toys R Us love the thing because it's a toy and a video game in one pretty much, and one thats pretty popular. Video games have kind of taken over the toy market because kids tend to care more about them then they do toys now a days (if you suck at parenting at least), so skylanders is nice because its a toy that works as a game as well. It also helps the game itself isn't totally irrating or stupid to adults either so the adults don't end up hating the thing like they do with furby (which by the way, is something like $60-$80 to get now...), zhuzhu pets, etc.

Its not a spyro game, its a spinoff of spyro

Still doesn't change the fact that in order to play the 60 dollar game one gets, you gotta buy all the little figures. Just because the on disk DLC is unlocked by toys doesn't change the fact that it's still disk locked DLC.
The toys come with the game, not the other way around.

Pokemon and yugioh cards are the exact same thing minus a video game. And those are random chance.
Dungeons and Dragons is also worse with all it's manuals and shit.
Skylanders is such a genius idea.
Its like crazy bones, except you can use your crazy bones in a game as characters.
If I was a kid id be all over this shit.
Least it isn't that Legend Of Spyro grimdark bullshit, god that had potential but it turned quickly after they took the franchise off Krome's hands and turned it into God Of War Clone
Hell one of the characters is like the scalie expy of that fox digimon all the furries fap to or Krystal from starfox
