• Replacing ATI card with nVidia

My HIS ATI HD4870 has become too unstable and probably not worth repairing as of late (see: http://www.reddit.com/r/hardware/comments/kbd5s/i_think_my_4870_has_finally_given_up/ )...so today I bought a "leadtek" GT 240 512MB (some sites indicate there are two versions of this, the one I got is the GDDR5 one) from a local store for $40. It's a decent deal from what I'm finding... Anyways, as I said in the reddit post I linked to above, I can't get past the BIOS with my 4870. How would I go about getting rid of the ATI drivers and installing the nVIDIA ones? Do I just boot into safe mode and download the latest nVIDIA driver and uninstall Catalyst and all the other components of the ATI driver? Thanks
You can just boot with the new GPU, the AMD catalyst control center will just tell you it is unable to find a AMD GPU, from there you can uninstall it, and after a reboot install the NVidia drivers.
Got it, and it's working great! Thanks. Also, I never knew that Nvidia's linux drivers were this much better than ATI's...it's a lot more stable for general things, and I imagine games will be better too. Plus, Nvidia's X configuration program is a lot better. ATI's always crashed and looked like it was ported over from Windows 98. I suppose it technically is AMD, but I'm used to calling it ATI, so I'ma stick with that :/
