I'm looking for a laptop for college. My price range is $800-$1000. Anyone have a good suggestion?
Get a net book and a desktop.
What are you going to use it for? Just typing, editing shit, media viewing?
Depends on your major. Most, you can get by with a standard laptop or netbook then save the extra cash for a good desktop.
I recently got my mom's old dell with a 1.4ghz celeron and it runs like new with ubuntu. I plan on using the money that would have gone into a new laptop on an octo-core i7 upgrade for my aging quadcore, when octo is available.
As long as you have campus wide wifi you should be able to remotely connect and access your desktop from around campus to do heavy computing.
My major is Mechanical Engineering Technology. Also, I'm gonna use it for entertainment since I can't bring Xbox or a TV.
Seconding netbook and desktop.
You need to make sure that it's portable, or that you have something portable. Netbook and desktop is actually a good idea, I wish I had thought of it. I've got an Asus f50 and it's great for gaming but it's difficult to take it anywhere, such as to class or back home during breaks because of its weight. Might as well have gotten a desktop.
Well, i don't have the space or the cash for a desktop/netbook set up. The dorms are pretty damn small. The computer i would need would have to run CAD, and my games at a good or high resolution. Plus i don't really like netbooks small keyboard and under powered processor. If i can, i could push my budget a little higher, but not much.
Get a laptop. A desktop/netbook combo is just clunky and annoying. I would suggest Alienware since they've gotten alot better quality, warranty and customer service-wise ever since they got bought out by Dell. iBuyPower also has some decent laptops at reasonable prices that are semi-customizeable.

If you don't mind a bit of a heavy laptop (w/ backpack it shouldn't matter) & re-certified, the G71's a steal. It's got a gtx 260 m, best you're gonna get for <$1000. I looked at the reviews and nobody really complained about the battery. Even still, you could get another with the money you save.

I have an Asus G71G. Besides being on the heavy side, it's excellent. It has never crashed, and it runs my games on high, plus it has no issue with my various rendering programs. Here's the computer: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B2+Duo+Processor+-+Black/9556125.p?id=1218124208054&skuId=9556125

Links broken. Best buy doesn't like direct links -_-
Also how's the battery life?
Thanks everyone for the suggestions, especially the ibuypower one. I think I found what I needed, thanks again Facepunch.

Ah. Damn. Go to best buy, gaming laptops, and it's the $999.99 one. Battery life isn't all that great. I get about an hour and a half on it if I'm not doing anything taxing. My college has tons of power outlets so, I don't have an issue, your college might be different. On the plus side, the cord that came with mine is at least three feet long.
Long story short, if your on a budget and want a beast of a laptop, this computer is a very good buy. Other than the short battery life and it getting hot during the middle of gaming, I haven't had any problems with it.
