Well if it wasn't any inspiration thats an awful lot of similarities if not straight up rips.
suuuuure
haha, whatever you say, man.
Just like TF2 wasn't inspiration for Overwatch.
Just like TF2 wasn't inspiration for Overwatch.
"team fortress wasn't an inspiration for team fortress 2" more like
When I saw it on Steam for a split second I thought "What the fuck is Overwatch doing on stea- oh wait".
It very well might have not. But when Overwatch dropped they sure as hell changed some things.
It very well might have not. But when Overwatch dropped they sure as hell changed some things.
The project was originally suppose to be Global Agenda 2 until they suddenly changed it into Paladins. This fact leads me to believe they're bullshitting unless they planned to drastically change Global Agenda.
The whole thread on reddit linked in the article shows proof about the game being in development as early as 2012. God knows people will still say things like "They didn't rip off overwatch, but they changed the game to copy it!" to keep the conflict alive, even when talking about OW characters that hadn't been revealed before the first gameplay footage of Paladins was shown to the public. But who can blame them, who'd want to find out they are wrong when one can just pretend none of this exists?
It's probably been said before, but Hero Shooters will end up just like MMOs and MOBAs; some game(s) will popularize it, then a whole bunch of knock-offs and clones will follow, and bar a few exceptions, will result in the genre being stagnant for at least a good few years. If this game really is so different from Overwatch, maybe they should make the differences much more clear, like even doing something like not using such a similar artstyle. EDIT: In fact, I think it might hurt Overwatch in the long run. I remember lurking here several years back, and while my memory isn't very good, DOTA 2 seemed to have at least been moderately popular on this forum, even including its own section. Today, after the many DOTA and LoL clones that popped up and subsequently went back down their rabbit holes, the DOTA 2 section is no more, and a lot of people here seem to have disdain for the game. I wouldn't be surprised if Overwatch gets the same sort of fate.
Those videos look nothing like the current game
~4 years development time will do that to a game
I was willing to let this shit slide because hey, lots of great games took shit from other great games. Blizzard devs admitted that TF2 inspired Overwatch (but so did Quake, CoD and even Enemy Territory). Alas, they decided to admit they are straight up ripping off Overwatch by lying about not being inspired by it.
As much as I would love to stick up for Paladins, as someone who has played on and off since the first closed beta availability, Paladins definitely changed heavily during development in the last several months. It was (seemingly) preparing to be a pretty unique take on a MOBA with lots of potential and then not only did Hi-Rez let the toxic-as-fuck community influence their decisions, but the success of Overwatch warped the HUD and Champions into a weird-ass hybrid of what the game once was and.. well literally just Overwatch. I'm so incredibly disappointed with it now, tbh
Just like TF2 wasn't inspiration for Overwatch.
blizzard has openly stated that they loved tf2 and wanted to build on games like it. Of course it was an inspiration. Every game builds off of other things other games have done.
~4 years development time will do that to a game
the point is that in those 4 years they decided cloning overwatch was a good idea.
God knows people will still say things like "They didn't rip off overwatch, but they changed the game to copy it!" to keep the conflict alive
yeah cause this is obviously totally impossible lol

This is HiRez we are talking about, since smite, they have been copying the latest craze in a half ass lazy way.
blizzard do not have 'person with bow and arrow', 'person with rocket launcher and jetpack' 'person with mech' or any other basic simple designs copyrighted. None of Overwatch's designs are particularly original, this game really doesn't steal that much from it considering that it was announced before Overwatch and I played it in Beta before Overwatch was out. I'll admit guys like Fernando are shitty equivalents but I'm willing to call that coincidence since Reinhardt's design isn't anywhere near unique AND Fernando and Reinhardt were unveiled pretty much at the same time. Why does nobody mention Androxus's completely unique abilities before calling him a McCree clone? Why does nobody even mention the design of Pip, a hero who is actually new, when talking about this? I think Paladins is an unpolished mess of a game, but calling it an Overwatch clone fails to understand game design. The hero designs are similar, but only because neither are particularly unique. The level design is vastly different, and the way you play the game is vastly different due to how much of an influence the card decks can have on how a hero plays.
I posted this as someone who played 20ish hours of Paladins and OW is one of my fav games of all time. I think Paladins is a badly designed games but outside of some character designs it's really not that similar, remember that back when OW launched everyone just called Roadhog Pudge. [editline]21st September 2016[/editline] Granted, I haven't played the game in 3 or so months, it could be just a shitty Overwatch clone now but I wouldn't assume too much has changed in 3 months. Even back then it got shit for being a clone but even then we failed to see any similarities that weren't skin deep.
Now I like Paladins and think it gets too much shit, but I do think that game has taken obvious inspiration from Overwatch. I believe Erez, the studio's CEO, has said himself that they have referenced it before. I can't find the source on that right now, sadly. But I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. While there are a lot of similarities (Fernando and Drogoz being the biggest examples), I think there's a lot of different things going for it that make it different enough. [editline]21st September 2016[/editline] So I was reading the article and noticed that they posted a link of the COO's response on Reddit talking about Paladins early dev history: https://www.reddit.com/r/Paladins/comments/53qusf/a_brief_history_of_paladins_as_response_to/?sort=confidence It goes into detail on how they started working on Paladins and their reaction to OW's announcement. He even shows videos of showing their chests before lootboxes and gameplay of their mecha character before D.va was shown off. There was even a user in the comments (Who is a Smite dataminer) posting a video of Evie (The ice character) using her ice block ability (Sept 2015) before Mei was ever revealed (Nov 2015): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkKr5CXX3XA&feature=youtu.be&t=329 I still think they they have taken some nods from OW (They have admitted that), but this shows me that it wasn't their goal to cash in on OW and to directly rip it off.
Just like TF2 wasn't inspiration for Overwatch.
Overwatch devs aren't pretending they weren't inspired by TF2 though.
Those videos look nothing like the current game, also what OW characters are you talking about?
Evie and Ruckus had been revealed before even concepts of the OW characters similar to them even got published. The fernando in the video you quoted plays a lot like the current Fernando, even though he is supposed to be a reinhardt clone. I Think they even teased a silhouette of him before reinhardt was first revealed (I know Pip and Grohk were teased that way), but I can't remember. Cassie, the archer accused of being a clone of Hanso (even though the only thing in common they have is using a bow) is featured in the second video. The second video also features something very similar to a game mode that was playable in the early versions of Paladins (capture points to spawn siege weapons to take down the enemy gates that are protecting the enemy vault. people fighting for gold and treasures was a concept from Aurum that was keept and still is kind of relevant in Paladins). Then you have Skye, the purple assassin that supposedly stole Widowmaker's color scheme and outfit, also being featured in some of the videos.
the point is that in those 4 years they decided cloning overwatch was a good idea.

yeah cause this is obviously totally impossible lol
Sure, if they had a time machine (Wouldn't it have made more sense for them to just kill Einstein so OW isn't made?) or if they had spies feeding info from Blizzard so they could copy content that hadn't been revealed yet. Not sure if it's reasonable, but I guess it is possible.
except multiple people pointed out the game strongly turned to copy overwatch towards the later stages of the beta, lower health pools and heroes that nearly directly copy OW heroes. This is HiRez we are talking about, since smite, they have been copying the latest craze in a half ass lazy way.
I was talking about, and I even specified it, the game itself being made as it's own thing, not what came later. The changes that came out in the last month or so are a whole thing on their own. (they covered the whys of them in the reddit thread.)
Overwatch devs aren't pretending they weren't inspired by TF2 though.
If you read the thread linked in the article you'd know the devs of this game didn't do that either, the only thing they said is the game wasn't created with the idea of ripping off OW in mind.
I can agree with people arguing that they copied Overwatch for Paladins but that's just retarded to say they copied other MOBAs with Smite. Smite is pretty damn innovative for the MOBA genre.
Smite is third person League of Legends.
Congrats, you just proved my point.
Paladin's is better than overwatch.
Wait. Hi-Rez made Paladins? I first found out about this game this morning when I watched Cr1TiKaL's video on it. Based on literally no research and just what it looked like I thought some Korean/Chinese ripoff company had made it. But that's my fault for not researching the game. But the footage I saw wasn't very impressive. :v:
