• Upgrading from GTX285

So it's been about a year since I've done anything with my PC and I feel like this is a good time to upgrade. I plan on getting a new case, a Corsair 800D, and alongside that maybe another GTX285 or upgrade. I haven't kept up with all the new 400 series cards but I know the newest is the 580. For some reason the price on the 285's has skyrocketed and I'm not sure whether I should SLI 285's, or sell mine and get a 480, or if I get enough money the 580. I don't need to go overboard though so the 580 is almost out of the picture. What would be a good upgrade from my position?
I don't know your budget is so if you can't find another GTX 285 for a cheap price I would say either GTX 570 or a 6950/6970 when they release.
I wasn't planning on going as much as $500 on a 580, but If I could get my 285 sold at a price like $200, I'd be willing to pay the difference for the 580. Right now I'm planning on going SLI. What about 2 GTX 470's?
I'd get a cheaper case, sell the 285 and get a 580. But that's just me, the case you're wanting to get is quite expensive and unless you need a full tower, don't get one.
also don't go for SLI immediately and I don't think you would be able to sell a 285 for anywhere close to $200
Considering the 580 is $500, the case you want is around $250 ($280 on newegg but they're doing an open box for $200) that means if you get a cheaper case at around $100-150 you'd be saving about $100-150. A GTX 285 is around $250? Sell it for $100-150, I'd definitely buy it at that price if I saw it and it was in good condition. So you'd be only putting around $200-300 got the 580, that thing will last you a long time too.

get 2 460s in sli if they are cheaper, i didnt look up any prices, but there probably isn't much difference, and 460s perform the same as 580, even better in some cases.

Well I actually just lost a motherboard (it fried, and I'm assuming either dust or static got to it). So for Christmas I just asked for a Corsair 800D. So the price of the case is out of the picture. Also, EVGA is letting me RMA my motherboard. So that's not a big deal.
get 2 460s in sli if they are cheaper, i didnt look up any prices, but there probably isn't much difference, and 460s perform the same as 580, even better in some cases.
What's the GTX 460's performance like compared to the 285? I'd assumed it'd be better, but for some reason that fact that the 460 is $200 cheaper tells me otherwise. Unless I slapped two of those baddies in SLI. [editline]4th December 2010[/editline] After doing some browsing, it doesn't look like anything will really benefit me until I get to about the 480. And at that price it would make sense to spend a few extra bucks and get the 580. So where I'm at I might just stay with a 285, maybe SLI. Sadly no DX11 though... not that it's really necessary
570 man it's going to be between the 480 and the 580 in terms of performance, and it's going to cost <$400
Any idea when that's supposed to release? I was just thinking 2x460's
It comes out in 3 days
SLI 285's only really beat SLI 460's in Left 4 Dead. I do play a lot of source engine games, but I feel like for DX11, an upgrade is worth it.
SLI GTX 460s. They're ~$155 each. [editline]4th December 2010[/editline]
Ok so I decided with the 2x460's. Tiger Direct has them for $150, and the SuperClocked edition for $200. Is it worth the extra $50 for SC?
If it's the same cooler, nope. If it's a different cooler it's probably still not worth it.
No. Thats just a marketing ploy.
I assumed, I did the same thing with my 285. So I'll just go with the regular 460.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130591 Two of those.
That's not a regular 460, it's a 460 SE, which is worse than the 460. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130562&cm_re=460-_-14-130-562-_-Product Regular edition for $10 more.
what about this http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6510322&CatId=3669

Ok, I plan on ordering two of those. Do they have good cooling? Because the corsair 800D isn't key on air cooling.
Ok, I plan on ordering two of those. Do they have good cooling? Because the corsair 800D isn't key on air cooling.
Yes. And they have a lifetime warranty. Plus awesome EVGA customer support. [editline]4th December 2010[/editline] Just be sure to register them.
Also, why is the one that thf posted better? The other one looks to have better specs, maybe I'm not catching something.
The 460 SE or the one you posted? If it's the 460 SE, well it's like a completely different card. Well not completely different, but different as in the difference between 460 and 470. The one you posted costs more and has a worse cooler.
Also, why is the one that thf posted better? The other one looks to have better specs, maybe I'm not catching something.
Less CUDA cores, lower clocks. All around downgrade.
Get 2 of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500169 $179 for GTX 460 1 GB
