• Is this computer slower than it should be?

As you can see, my brother's computer is a bit outdated: - P4 3.0GHz (800MHz FSB) - 1.5GB mismatched RAM (2x 512MB, 2x 256MB) running in single channel. - Sapphire HD2600 Pro AGP (latest drivers) - ASRock P4V88+ Motherboard (with latest BIOS) Anyway, while the computer is, in general, quite fast (considering its age) especially in older graphics engines, such as the UT2004 engine in Killing Floor, it performs incredibly badly in newer Source engine games such as TF2, even with an extreme performance config (including no bumpmaps, low everything, no AA or AF and directx 8.1) he gets 4 FPS in conflict areas and around 20 FPS otherwise. His CPU has a tendancy to overheat, with the temperatures often reaching 75c (even after replacing thermal paste, which had dried up somehow). This does not seem to be load related as it remains stable around 70-75 whether it is in the BIOS setup utility (even reached those temps after a cold boot into the BIOS after a few minutes) or running at 100% usage for an extended period of time. Thermal throttling is disabled and the CPU is running on stock speeds with a stock cooler. Also, he is running Windows 7 x86, but the same problem was present on Vista. I have also tweaked countless BIOS settings no no avail. Any ideas to improve performance that don't involve buying new hardware? I used the computer a couple of years ago (albeit with a 6600GT (on which the graphics memory went bad) and 512MB of RAM in dual channel) and it was never this bad. OK so I wasn't playing TF2 then, but it still got much better performance in other games than it does now.
Feed him your wii. That should do the trick. My god, I never realized how clever I was. (User was banned for this post ("Useless bump" - Greeman))
Yeah sounds about right. It can't handle the source engine but games based on older engines will work just fine.
75C? Pee-shaw. I've gotten mine up to 110C.
