So I have this wireless router that I dont use and im wondering if I can use it to tether another routers signal and still work.
not just my router but how about someone elses wifi? I know that tethering like this is possible but does anyone know where to get the software? Do I need to flash my routers firmware with a custom one?
So you want to use your existing router as a bridge? or as a repeater?
Both options might be possible if your router supports it or if your router is supported by a custom firmware like DDWRT.
BTW, post the router's brand and model, we need that kind of information.
for someone elses wifi, i wanna tether my friends (also on my street) wifi so I can LAN games with him without going through the Internet. The thing is, my phones wifi and my laptops wifi kinda sucks, although it kinda works, it always DCs often. I would imagine that the router that I have can get better signal (as in send it better because of the two antennas) than the ones on my phone and laptop. I mean, if I can use my wireless router as an adapter, that would work to as it's the same thing as tethering.
router for tethering: trendnet wireless tew-652brp
it's probably going to be as a bridge but i dont see the difference...
...between bridge and repeater...
...someone please explain.
I'm not sure what a bridge is, someone else can get that.
A reapeter is flashed with CFW to take a set SSID, feed off that access point's internet, and reapet the signal. In a nutshell, it just clones a connection, alowing it to be etended. Useful if put in a weatherproof box outside for things like patios, backyards, outdoor masturbating and such.
I think I will go for the repeater method assuming it s the one I want and that there is no dif from a bridge.
There are 3 types of hardware (Or software settings) that you can fool with wireless networks.
The first is an access point, which turns a wired connection into a wireless connection.
The second is a wireless bridge, which does the opposite, catches a wireless connection and makes it wired.
And third is a repeater, which catches a wireless network and sends it back out again through wireless.
In that case Ima go with a repeater as that's the one I want. To expand a wireless routerwith another wireless router.
Assuming that I can change the said name or the expansion routrr

just checked the under side of the router, it's v2.2.......
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
hopes that ddwrt makes custom firmware for v2.2.........
hm, I think my friends have some unused wireless routers, maybe I can find some...

They have a router database where you can check routers that are supported, my experience has been that most linksys routers are supported by DDWRT.
