Alright so my friend games with me a lot, we play games like TF2 and L4D quite often. Though my computer plays games fine, he's running a pre-built that he's forced to run all games on lowest settings with. He isn't even able to run Alien Swarm. Since his birthday is coming up, if it's possible, I thought it would be nice if me and a buddy upgraded his video card (And whatever else may be necessary)
His specs

If possible at all, what's the best card we can get him where he'll notice a large increase in performance for his games?
I'll give you guys a mention in his birthday card for helping me out
Why don't you just give him $20 or something since you really can't upgrade that setup. I would tell him to save up the bday money for a new build.
You're one hell of a friend if you're getting him a new graphics card.

Well, the integrated graphics desperately need to be retired, but we would need to know the power supply and its specs, whether the motherboard has a PCI-E 16X slot, and the situation with space in a prebuilt is often an issue as well.
maybe get him a 5670? what is his PSU?
but really, saving up for a new PC is best option. not much can be done for that rig.
I'll have to pause this until tomorrow then so I can ask him for the additional info. Was hoping I wouldn't have to, wanted to keep it a surprise, he'll probably get suspicious now that I'll be asking him to snoop around inside his computer case. Thanks for the fast response.
Yeah you would need to buy a new everything.
AM3 motherboard (50$-100)
AM3 CPU (quad core athlon II for $100 and 6 core phenoms for $200)
GPU (something like a HD 5770 for $150)
DDR3 RAM (30$ a GB)
Most likely it has a 200-350watt power supply that wouldn't support a graphics card so you'd need to aim for a bigger power supply in the 500w+ range ($50-100)
and a Windows 7 64-bit of course
finally as said above most likely need a computer case as well.
Upgradability is nearly impossible and there is always places like [url]http://www.ibuypower.com/[/url] to consider.
Would you mind putting me together the exact parts I would need? (Newegg or something)
Hopefully sticking to some parts that are not THAT expensive, what I might do is pay a considerable part of it with some other guys and maybe it would motivate him to pay the rest.
Thanks for the help

Unless you are willing to shell out more than $500, you cannot get him a whole new PC by yourself.

Unless you want to idk you might be rich

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU rate me bad reading. You could probably get a whole new build for $650ish. His monitor really sucks too, but that would be another $125ish.
maybe you and a group of friends can pool money together to build him a new rig?
wow you are an awesome friend, but as it stands, there's no hope for upgrading that computer
not too worried about his PSU, but what does his motherboard have PCIe?
I'm pretty much doing the same thing for a friend right now, but mostly spare parts with some new.
[editline]08:16PM[/editline]
got spare parts you can use to save some cash?
Only spare thing I have is an X1950 pro, which I used to run TF2 and most games fine with surprisingly. Don't think he has AGP slot though.
Total combined with all of us together is like 300$, so that's like paying half of his computer, if he is willing to pay the other half then I would order and put it together for him.
nooo don't make him pay anything
[editline]11:36PM[/editline]
get more friends
[editline]11:36PM[/editline]
oooh or start a donation thing and let 4chan see it
Sadly, I don't think it would work. I wish though, you are optimistic.
I'll update you guys when I find some sort of solution, I really want to be able to do this, I'll ask some friends if they're willing to give a little more, me and a buddy are giving 100$ each.

More like:
AM3 Mobo (about $50)
Triple core AM3 CPU ($70) Or a high end quad core CPU ($160)
4GB DDR3 RAM ($82)
400-500W PSU ($40-$60)
5770/4870 (Whichever's cheaper) or 4850 (5770 = $150, 4850 = $100)
Decent case ($40 for a Rosewill Blackbone)
1TB HDD ($75) or 500GB HDD ($55)
Windows 7 ($100)
