I want to learn to speak French since I'm going to Paris next year with my wife. Anyone know of any good (preferably free) resources to do so?

Most people in Paris speak French anyway, much to my surprise when i went :v:
Pardon my French, but I fucking love English.
[sp]I don't see French as a useful language where I live. (Southern U.S.) I'd much prefer Spanish as a secondary language if I'm going to put effort into learning [/sp]
Rosetta stone trial
im a french, can i help ya?

Might not be useful where you life, but I'm going to Paris, I'd like to speak the language so I'm not some dumb tourist.
Can I get by with German there?
^ We noticed.

Where?
Also, I love english. I'm german but I LOVE talking in english (even though I fail at it sometimes).
Where what?
You'd be surprised how practically everyone can speak english in france. I find french to be a pretty dying language, I'm canadian french and easily 50% of Quebec's population is english I'd say.
Really? I heard a lot Parisians get offended when Americans don't speak French.

Quebec has a few laws for maintaining French as its language of primary use. However I think the OP would get by with only speaking English if it's only for the duration of his vacation that he'll be there.
@OP, I don't think you'll shed the "dumb tourist" title even if you do pick up some French. Like I mentioned earlier I'd learn Spanish if anything but I wouldn't be able to escape sounding like a gringo. Same situation if you ask me.

Well, since I'm canadian french I don't know everything but from what I heard they don't exactly get offended, they just really prefer you to TRY talking french, even if it's just a little, they'll usually be happy only from knowing you're trying so if you want I'd say go for it, french is a pretty difficult language.
I have a few english friends and some of them are girls and they totally melt when I talk to them in french, it's quite funny because I'm so used to french to me it's just your average language but to other peoples you're like a romantic god or something.

[sp]Possibly the only useful application.[/sp]

Ok then, "where" being Paris, the place we've been talking about the whole time. I know areas of France speak a lot of German, and I'm fluent so if I can get by with that, then I'm good.

What is so great about Spanish in comparison to French?

Spanish is in the top five (maybe three) of most spoken languages in the world, French is lower. If you live in the States, well you know why Spanish is spoken there a lot.
