• £500-600 build

Just looking for a nice clean build to play recent games on highish settings e.g. Farcry 3, CS:GO, Metro: Last Light (which seems perfectly possible on this budget). I'm probably going to keep my current monitor (1400x900) but it seems in terms of hardware it's best to start a new slate (my current computer has freezing problems, graphics card overheats, think the HDD's are dying). I could possibly re-use my case if you guys think it's suitable: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Storm-Mid-Tower-Scout-Case/dp/B0027YSEBE The main problem is that I know fuck all about hardware or building in general. If possible could you guys refer me to some kind of guide or hints on building PC's for someone with not much experience? Obviously I know how to install RAM and remove/insert HDD's and shit, I just don't want to fuck anything up. I think it'd be quite useful to learn about hardware and what not too, but don't know exactly where to start.

Newegg has a ton of tutorials on their channel. I recommend those. How to build a computer part II gives you the most general computer building guide. Maybe a G45-gaming or z87x-d3h.
why not just a msi-g41
The g45 gaming is better, and it should still be within the budget. It can support both SLI and CrossfireX, and it has better audio quality.
Thanks for the replies. I have a friend or two who have built PC's so I could show potential builds to them and see what they think. If people can agree on a build being nice enough for the price without getting bogged down in too many details (I know fuck all when it comes to the details so it'd be hard to know who to agree with, without letting this thread run for like two months) I'd be happy to purchase it.

If other people would be kind enough to make up some other builds would be greatly appreciated.
get the 7870 xt http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-video-card-fx787acnac it's only £11 more but a big(ish) jump in performance
What would you guys recommend for a decent case? Think I may get rid of this one. Also I've never had an ATI card before, are the drivers really that big of a problem?
What would you guys recommend for a decent case? Think I may get rid of this one. Also I've never had an ATI card before, are the drivers really that big of a problem?
They're AMD cards now, ATI no longer exists. It's not so much drivers that are a problem, but rather a few games weren't programmed for them properly. These games are far and few and shouldn't be a problem. As far as graphics drivers themselves having problems, Nvidia's do too occasionally (a recent driver updated even fried some people's video cards). So either way you can have problems.
unless you're going to run linux drivers shouldn't really be a problem

A friend made a few changes (PSU, GPU, RAM), curious as to what you guys think: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/1ho3o I did hear modular PSU's are much more convenient and less cluttered and perhaps I'm just paying for the brand with Corsair
A friend made a few changes (PSU, GPU, RAM), curious as to what you guys think: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/1ho3o I did hear modular PSU's are much more convenient and less cluttered and perhaps I'm just paying for the brand with Corsair
That RAM will either run underclocked or fry your CPU. Intel CPUs support an absolute maximum of 1.5V operating voltage and that RAM is above that. I wouldn't pay that much more for a modular PSU unless: (A) Non-modular didn't have enough cables which should only happen in multi-card configurations. (B) There was better reviews on the modular one that indicated better efficiency. Look up some reviews and try and figure out which one is actually better since they are both bronze. As far as the GPU, I agree with Eltro102, go for the 7870 xt. I still recommend the G45-gaming or the z87x-d3h over that motherboard.
get a modular psu get the XT not the GHz edition, XT is basically a 79xx with a bunch of cores broken/turned off [editline]16th July 2013[/editline] get this PSU http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-cx500m
My friend says the max recommended is 1.65v operating voltage but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to stay under, so I'll most likely buy the Corsair RAM. I'll probably stick to my current case as it seems large enough (will be sure to check) and has 3 fans. Why do you recommend those motherboards? Doubt I'll be using more than one PCI-E slot. [editline]16th July 2013[/editline]
get a modular psu get the XT not the GHz edition, XT is basically a 79xx with a bunch of cores broken/turned off [editline]16th July 2013[/editline] get this PSU http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-cx500m
Will look into the XT, seems a bit harder to find though. Yeah I was thinking modular just for convenience really, and that one has better reviews than http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0068OCX8O/?tag=pcp0f-21 take it the wattage isn't an issue unless I'm looking to overclock
My friend says the max recommended is 1.65v operating voltage
Your friend is wrong. Intel recommends 1.5V and has since sandy bridge. You might be able to run at 1.65 (and in my limited research I have seen this done with safe results), but you would run the risk of damaging the memory controller (read irrevocably damaging the processor to the extent it will not run...at all). There's just no point in trying to go above that if you're not a ridiculous overclocking enthusiast anyway. If you're never going to use more than one PCI-e slot you should go for a much cheaper motherboard than that. Go for the G41 like Eltro suggested. Specifically this: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-motherboard-z87g41pcmate
Alright this is how the build's shaped up: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/SonyTwan/saved/1YNw Good to go? If so may order this weekend. Don't know why I'm going about getting a new PC when I have wrist problems, although it'll be great to have some new games to play when they've improved somewhat. I'll probably just end up playing anyway. also I recently bought Far Cry 3/BD and Bioshock Infinite and they come with the fucking GPU
Looks good to me.
Everything's ordered (fuck you VAT), thanks for the help, will let you know how it goes.
