Hey, can any of you recommend me a good laptop for university? Preferably lightweight, as I'll be carrying it around a lot. I want to have decent FPS while running Starcraft 2 on max resolution/low settings and LoL on highest settings. I've heard good things about the Lenovo Ideapads/Thinkpads, how are those?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215409 This will be able to run SC2 on low and LoL on decently high settings. The cpu is solid, 8GB of memory should be enough and the 640M is about as good as an HD6670. However, it does have a big screen so if you intend to take it to classes then I can recommend another laptop.
If you want a 12 inch, sager has one with a 650m in it. http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.php?page=product_info&model_name=NP6110
Ideapads are consumer grade material. The thinkpads are build considerably tougher. W and T series support discrete GPU's. Go for minimum Ram and HD space. Any OEM is going to murder you with those, and lenovo is no exception. I've recommended something in this ballpark to several people. Go to newegg and buy a 4 gig stick of RAM for 8 gigs total. Costs 20-30 dollars there and 150 or so from lenovo. The extended warranty is worth it. Currently the battery warranty has a weird sale so the 4 year warranty is less than the 3 year one, and I have never seen a battery last more than two years. Usually its 12-18 months. The battery warranty will pay for itself after one use, and will save you in the long run, unless you don't mind a half hour battery life after 2-3 years. Something else to note, for whatever reason that particular i5 processor was listed as +80 dollars off of the default, when it's actually less than 30 dollars. It's the low end one, but an i7 is a waste on a notebook, and I'd argue that it's not worth the subsequent 100 dollars to go to the next level i5. They appear to have fixed the listing errors in prices, however some sales have ended, so this build costs about 1100 right now. I'd recommend waiting a few days because they have been having these sales intermittently for the better part of a month now, and you may be able to save 100-200 dollars off of current listings. Also, this build is identical for both the 14 and 15 inch models.
