Annnd this is part of the beef I have with forced automatic updates. If windows 10 let you say pick an update day of the month, or delay it a few days I feel it would be much much better.

Problem solved. I update when I choose to for this specific reason, last thing I need is some stupid ass automated update knocking out a workstation.

Seems the actual issue the PCG article refers to is one in corporate environments. WSUS for some reason received a "delta" update that it shouldn't have gotten and if one allows WSUS to deploy the update it causes a BSOD of "Inaccessable Boot Device."

but it literally does this. today i got a notification that an update is ready and clicking on it let me schedule a date and time to auto-reboot my computer and install it

Automatic updates should be the default, but there should definitely be a setting to make sure they don't install automatically (as is the case with macOS). The bigger problem is Microsoft's testing process, but automatic updates should be disableable

Main feature I want is the ability to shut down my computer without installing updates.
Some might say "why does it matter, Windows will install the updates and turn your PC off regardless of your presence", but it is a problem for me.
I live in an old apartment building and thunderstorms can damage electronics. If there is lighting I need to shut my PC down and disconnect it from the wall asap.

I got this a few weeks ago. There was absolutely no way to solve it without formatting and reinstalling Windows. The startup recovery tool disabled the mouse/keyboard when the screen appeared, too. And I tried PS/2 and USB Mice/Keyboards and made sure the PS/2 were enabled in the bios. It was a shit show. Messing around in CMD it didn't even recognize that windows was installed at all

I've seen what happens when a surge hits a PC. One of mine was fried when the power company turned the power off, then a couple hours later turned it back on. The entire house smelled of that electric burning smell so bad that I had every window open and fan on. Everything in the motherboard and on the motherboard was fucked, and visibly so
Now I have a surge protector, an Anti-surge PSU and an Anti-Surge Motherboard. I'd spring for a UPS as well but the power goes out so rarely I don't really see a need
Every month there is news that windows update screwed somthing up or disabled a feature.... Im glad i have it disabled. Unless youre someones grandparents or not tech savvy enough to have ublock/noscript installed you shouldnt be getting viruses.
I can't even get the anniversary update because it refuses to connect to the internet afterward. Still no fix after all this time.
Huh I've had this update queued for god knows how long, haven't shutdown my PC in over a week so it's just sat there telling me to update.
Hopefully it wont brick it when I eventually get forced to shutdown my system.
huh
i installed the update but i haven't had any BSOD bootlops, any fixes if the bootlop is already in place?

Oh my, you have no idea how security works. If you consistently ignore updates, ublock/noscript ain't gonna help you. Security updates fix exploits, and exploits allow malware onto your machine without you having to do anything different.
If you don't wanna get viruses, use an anti-virus and keep your Windows updated with the latest security updates. I think there's a setting in Windows Update for just security updates? I might be wrong though, been a while

Is it not possible to just wait 1 minute after closing all your applications, and then pull the plug? NTFS is a journaling filesystem, surely it can recover easily after having flushed all file changes with no issues. I know that wasn't the case back with XP, but it's been quite some time now.

Often takes longer with spinning rust drives, and I don't know about him, but I'm about to practice sodomising with my workboots on whoever though forced update install on shutdown is a great idea when a big thunderstorm is suddenly coming.
Disabling hybrid sleep/hibernate and just using hibernate is a workaround, but a hacky one.

Here is a trick I use for my laptop when I don't want it to update in the bus or on-the-go:
- Win-key + R
- shutdown -f -s -t 0
f = force. Close/ignore all programs.
s = shutdown .
t 0 = 0 seconds.
However the system seems to update when you start it up again.

Yeah, you can just update windows defender but you need to do it manually if you dont have windows updates turned on.

That's still not enough. How great is your protection from malicious websites if the underlying parts of Windows Defender are broken? I don't mean Windows Defender itself, I mean the parts that it rely on, that are not part of itself. Software is not standalone structures, they all depend on points of failures, and keeping them all patched up with security fixes at all times is one of the few ways of minimizing the amount of trouble you're setting yourself up for.

That's a feature but not on the home version. My Surface Pro lets me do that but not my Desktop because the latter is the home version

I'll have to try and remember these. If it works it fixes the main beef I have with Windows 10.

Sometimes it takes up to ten minutes for the updates to install and the PC to finally turn off.
Last year I was just about to leave for two weeks, ten minutes before I have to be on my way and I hit the "update & shut down" without realizing because I was in a hurry. I want to disconnect everything from the wall sockets because it's summer and thunderstorms may happen.
I was literally sitting there staring at my wrist watch with my finger on the PSU power button thinking reinstalling a fucked windows is less of a pain in the ass than replacing broken components.
If I had seen the update & shut down I would gone straight for the PSU power.

Just used it yesterday right before an update and it first started updating today.
You can also make it a shortcut on the desktop to instant close windows 10

Just notice that the system have to update when you start it up again, so you better not use this method right before a presentation.

They have since pulled the update to stop machines getting it, I believe they did that pretty quickly as well. (For Microsoft)
Wonder why my laptop didn't get this bug

shutdown /f /t 0?
should be able to do it without running updates.

Because as Kigen said, this update only affects machines updated through WSUS. If you're a standalone PC using Windows Update (AKA not on domain), you're fine.
