I have this microphone, and I want to record stuff but everything I record is really really quiet. I've tried fucking about in the microphones settings in the control panel, but it doesn't seem to work. Any idea how to fix this?
Have you tried the microphone boost option? Do you even have it? Some sound cards don't support it.
I probably don't have it. It's an old computer, and I think the soundcard is a bit bad.
Assuming your on Windows 7, go to your recording devices, go into your Microphone settings and the option should be under "Custom" or "Levels".
Some sound cards have it as a Slider, and some have a button that just enables it.
Unfortunately I'm on Windows XP. I guess I should've included that in the OP.
No you should include what you ARE on

I have a feeling that his post had a typo and that he is running XP.
Yes.
The setting is still there in XP, its just a little more difficult to find.
Double click the volume control widget in your system tray
In the Options menu, select Properties.
In the Properties window, select the PLAYBACK radio button
Under the *Show the following volume controls* list select all listed components and click OK
In the Properties window, select the RECORDING radio button
Under the *Show the following volume controls* list select all listed components and click OK
In the Options menu, the Advanced Controls item should be checked.
Under the Microphone device, you will now see an Advanced button, click it.
Select the Microphone Boost check box
Hey, that worked! It sounds at least a little bit better now. You can make out what I'm saying. Thanks!
Boost the audio by 30 decibels or so. :science:
You might want to get a hard hat so when it gets loud rubble won't fall.
Right click on the volume thing at the right bottom of your screen recording devices - select your mic - properties - and then there is a tab where you can boost the mic
