SUPER Fast Internet Connection after Replugging Everything?
17 replies, posted
So, I couldn't connect to the internet this morning and I had to replug everything in order for it to work again. Everything was going well and I connected to Steam. To test my internet connectivity, I resumed downloading Portal from where I left off. To my suprise, it was downloading at 2.0 mb/s for a bit, but than dropped to 500 kb/s. Though that is a huge drop, I usually download stuff at 200 kb/s. So, that 500 kb/s seemed really weird. Anyone know why?

Why?

Also, by downloading Portal I meant updating it.
It might be showing wrong results, so go to http://www.speedtest.net to see that it's correct.
Also, I wouldn't trust the values that Steam puts next to your games. It's been telling that I'm downloading Portal at 4.8MB/s, but I know that's a lie, because I know my line isn't capable of anything over 1.2MB/s. When I actually go and check the DOWNLOADS page, I find that the "Current Download Rate" is actually at 1.1MB/s - which is about right for a 12Mb connection like mine.
I'm hoping they fix this little glitch.

Thanks for your input, but I did check the Downloads page.
Peak Download Rate = ~2.2 mb/s
Download Rate = ~500 kb/s
Also, I just shut down my computer and turned it on again to see if I would get the same results.

What down/up speeds are you even paying for? Is that what you should've been getting the whole time?

I don't know. My parents (yes I'm not an adult like you guys) really don't know anything about that. They describe it as being the "basic" internet from Comcast.
Comcast gives you speed boost so speed test results are jacked up because you get unlimited speed for like 30 second and then it drops off. Also I have charter and when I download from steam it says 2.5 mb while I can only download at 1 mb.
Weird, my connection was messed up again just a few minutes ago. Had to replug everything AGAIN.
To sbradford, my download was stable at 1.6 mb/s while downloading Just Cause 2 a few hours ago.

haha
are you using a dynamic IP adress. with my router i could get a 100mbit/s connection and my parents is paying for 10 mbit/s. but that fucks up the wireless connection for some wierd reason and the upload is pretty much shit for some reason compered with the 10 mbit/s connetion

Yeah, my wireless is really weak compared to wired. That's why I always hook up my laptop to it using the only wire I have to use download stuff to it. Kind of defeats the purpose, right?
And, FHamster. What? I'm not cool now am I.
Is this bad?

Most likely, comcat changed your rates. Thats why you had to restart everything.

That doesn't mean you downloaded at 18 megabytes per second. It means you have an 18megabit connection.
You download at about 1.8mbps.

Yeah I know that it is 1.8 mbps. But I'm used to downloading stuff at 200 kb/s. Ok, so it's been stable for a while now. You guys can ignore this thread. :iiam: still because I don't know why I would start suddenly having fast internet after replugging everything. Let's just leave it at that.
