Exactly my thoughts. Grades don't mean shit if you can't do the job at hand right.
The Facepunch Studios site looks damn nice
I feel like asking Garry how to get into the game industry is like asking an band who self-publishes all their stuff how to get into the music industry. Sure, Garry's Mod and Rust have sold a shitton but I've never thought of Garry as "in the industry".
You offer something what's everyones dream - work at home, grades doesn't metter if you can do your job well. Keep it up, good luck.
I'm pretty lucky to have parents that understand that in order to land a job in this industry I have to slave my teenage life away on a computer
I've always wanted to work at Facepunch, I mean at the moment my grades in school are pretty bad (I'm in Year 10 by the way). I'm only 2 hours a way from Walsall so it isn't really that impossible for me to do once I leave school and finish all my stuff. I guess I'll see what I do with my life, but working at Facepunch seems like a good opportunity for me. these are some mature looking business partners you got there :v:
I get asked all the time in college when I show something I made at home why I am not doing a games design course and trying to get into the industry and I always have to tell them that I have no interest in working for someone else as it would kill all of my passion and drive to make games. I don't want to make some other guys dream game I want to make my own and I want to make it to the best of my ability without being told I need to cut corners to meet deadlines. I will happily work a normal job making games as a hobby and if one takes off that would be great if not oh well at least I tried time to start on a different game I would want to play. I am not going to take one of the things that makes me happy into a chore to pay my bills.
How much did that stock image cost you?
enough laughing now
It seems like you also need to be a pretty blond woman.
What Garry's said here goes for almost everything else, too. If you've got a specific career path you want to break into, you usually have to be doing something in that career path for most companies to hire you. I'm in the journalism industry (while attending a university journalism course - simultaneously!), and we see the same stuff all the time. Someone wants to write for the paper, but they've never actually written for a paper before. Or they want to be a radio broadcaster, but they've never put any effort into a work portfolio. These people get turned down every day because, despite wanting to be in that industry, they're not actually part of it yet. It's the same reason you see entry level jobs that require two or three years of experience, as well. Companies want to know that you know what you're doing before they put you in a position where you have to know what you're doing. It's why I volunteer for the university's news website, write for their paper, will soon be starting at a local paper, and run a professional blog. You have to have something to show for yourself.
correct me if im wrong but did rust sell more than garrysmod on its lifetime?

Gary will you hire me? I have over 100+ hours on gmod, so I would be great employee
All i can say is that your part of the industry when your very successful... he was successful twice when rust and garry's mod was released.
Yeah, but there have been less successful (read: didn't sell as much as Garry's Mod/Rust) indie games made by people who I'd consider more "in the industry" than Garry.
Garry didn't even really make Rust though so...
I wonder if those are actual Facepunch employees as pictured in the article?
If you're a complete newbie to this kind of stuff talking and interacting with people in the industry helps a shit tonne, even if they're relatively low in the pecking order themselves. Add them on Twitter or Steam or wherever and engage in inquisitive conversation. Ask them questions, some might not be as willing to talk than others but generally people will talk wholeheartedly about the stuff they love and be glad that someone else shares their interests. You never know, someone might know a guy who knows a guy who's looking for an artist or a level designer, and that could be your ticket.
Almost every game studio has some sort of panoramic picture of all its employees. Garry should do the same
enough laughing now ~
I had to look three times just to make sure you didn't photoshop it. Why do I think everything is fake, bawls.
Almost every game studio has some sort of panoramic picture of all its employees. Garry should do the same
It would just be a picture of postal's ass.
Gary will you hire me? I have over 100+ hours on gmod, so I would be great employee
I think Valve one time hired someone just like that to do community management. Later he was fired for doing some bad joke using his priviledged access. Sadly, i can't remember much. Very old stuff.
Why does the right guy in the picture remind me of Kleiner

Seems pretty legit. This list seems to highlight the things most appreciated by the games industry, at least here in Finland.
The Facepunch Studios site looks damn nice
congratulations you're hired
This is because we aren’t other game studios. Sometimes we’ll get a candidate who has obviously been institutionalised by the game studios they’ve worked at.
Fantastic Philosophy.
