Some people may say i post quite a few threads a day. but there is a time in a family where everyone realises.
Everythings shit...
So basically what i was wondering:
My family want to spend 500£ on a new computer including a monintor and keyboard and mouse. Now this is just for my little bro's to play runescape and stuff. Nothing like sourcegames. What i want to know is that my computer is a Core2Quad q6600 Nvidia GeForce 240GT 4GB DDR2 RAM and should i just pass down some items, or everything to them and i get to spend the 500£?
They cant upgrade anything since its an old mac that they were on. Should i keep my Core2Quad pass them down the GT240 get them a light AMD CPU?
I know it may be slightly confusing so just to revise:
My computer - Core2Quad Q6600 Nvidia GeForce GT240 4GB RAM DDR2 - i play big games and all source
Family computer (needs replacing) - Emac, thus unupgradable, needed for runescape internet browsing, etc..
Spending limit - 500
Needed for family computer - Everything + small screen ( 17" maybe?) + keyboard and mouse.
My questions - Should i give them some of my old stuff and buy some new sstuff for them aswell and spend the remainder on buying parts for my pc?
Or should i give them my whole pc and buy a new pc for me if it would be better?
Many thanks
Give them the gt 240 then get your self a nice gpu and give them a athlon x4 or x2 and 2 or 4 gigs of ram.
So, the most advanced game they're playing is Runescape? You won't have to pay much for that.
What site do you prefer?

True source games even run easily on a ati integrated 3200.

Or 3100. :haw:
Well, not runescape, in the near future i can see them running WoW and my mum will want to like photo shit a BIT
But yeh, i like ebuyer or scan plz (scan preferably). So you are saying i give them my GT240 (and powersupply since its shit) and i get a new PSu and GPU? or would i be able to get a better computer for 500 then i have?
Or would there be a better alternative?
[editline]08:31PM[/editline]
I would just like to point out, its not a finite number the 500, i believe it maybe be able to go to 550-600, i will check with them.
If it is 550-600 the best option would be to give them my thing and keep my case + harddrive and get new shit for me and buy a small harddrive and cheap case for the family right? i would be able to get a 5850 i5 build on 600 maybe?
[editline]09:02PM[/editline]
So my mums been very lame and she just bought

+
[url]http://www.ebuyer.com/product/199440[/url]
Since my case is very gammy, should i see if she will let me swap my 240 for a 5750, which i believe is better (im sure she will let me do that) and she may potentially let me swap the C2Q Q6600 for the Athlon II X4 620 which from some reviews ive seen is better?

Just switch it some time she will not notice.
[editline]05:56PM[/editline]
Also your mom should check because that desktop says it has no os.
She knows i have a spare copy of win7
I know i can easily swap the 5750. The Athlon II X4 will take more cunningness or persuasion :P
Is the Athlon much better than the Q6600 because if its a small bit better then i cba :/ and also im guessing my motherboard, the GA EP43 UD3L is better than the one that comes with the prebuilt.
I did think to myself though that thats pretty cheap for what it is, especially seeming its a prebuilt...

Pretty sure the q6600 is better so just stick with that but definitely take the gpu because they will never use it to its full extent.
Surprisingly good deal for a prebuilt, there, at least she knows better than to get drawn in by dells and the like.
Well she did own the first webdesign company in the UK and open one of the first websites in the world so shes a bit webwise.
Sbradford, its just i was looking at [url]http://www.techspot.com/review/197-amd-athlon2-x4-620/[/url]
Anyway ill stay with the C2Q.
I was wondering, wat should i set my FSB and multiplier to, im not on a Stock cooler but im not sure what the cooler is, its a Collermaster one, its nice.
Anyway the fsb is at default at 266 and the x is at 8.
What should i raise them to do you think? Whats the limit on intel stock cooler cus then i will just go a like a bit over?
Regards
Henry
The Q6600's multiplier is 9. If you have it at 8 the clock speed will only be 2.1GHz. If the temps are reasonable then you can probably get around 3GHz on the stock cooler without touching voltages.
ok well wierdly it did say it was set to 2.13 not 2.4 and i was thinking ...
anyway will do
ill go to around 3.3 ghz maybe?
[editline]10:54PM[/editline]
Well i stuck it up to 350 x 9 then i left it at 322 x 9 :P
It depends; not all CPUs are created equal. Use this to check for stability: [url]http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/663563/LinX/en/LinX.7z[/url]
Set Lin X to maximum memory and 20 runs. Monitor the temperatures carefully using this: [url]http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/[/url]
Anything above 75C is too hot.
If it fails the Lin X test then the CPU is unstable you should reduce the FSB and try again.
3.3GHz will probably require a voltage bump, which is not advisable with standard cooling.
Yeh i left it at 2.8 somthing i believe.
Ok so i run lin x whilst checking temperature? How long do i wait till i press stop on lin x or do i let it run?
It will stop automatically if it finishes without errors or if an error is found part way through. Do keep both eyes on the temperatures as it is a very stressful stability test.
so it will run 20 times??
for like 2 seconds 2 of the cores went to 77 but the average i would say is around 70/72? highest maximum is 78, should i lower the GHz?
[editline]11:17PM[/editline]
yeh im gunna lower it next time i shut down, they are around 76 but i wont do it now, just later ok?
ill stick it down to around 2.7 maybe? or 2.8 on the dot?
The temperature won't reduce if you lower the clock speed, it's the voltage that determines that. I would say those temps are ok if it's for a short period, but long term it would be much too hot.
Get this if you want to do any considerable overclocks: [url]http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/11718775/Cooler-Master-Hyper-212-Plus-CPU-Cooler-Heatsink/Product.html[/url]
I have my Q6600 running at 9 X 400 (3.6GHz) with a core voltage of 1.37
actually now on the 6/7 run 2 are 68/69 and 2 are 74 so ill stick it on 2.8 ghz on the dott, though i never run my cpu at 100% tbh
maybe i should leave it?
What to do ferrus...
[editline]11:19PM[/editline]
yeh its around 2.9 ghz actually
[editline]11:20PM[/editline]
i never ever ever run at 100% cpu, the highest ive seen my cpu run was at 40% when it was like 30c in my room one summer and my case was total fail and had no fans except for the stock cooler :O
It's up to you, but I like to know my CPU is stable if I'm overclocking. You might think my method is over the top, but some people will actually set Lin X to 50 AND run Prime 95 for 24hrs!
Maybe save up for a good cooler and then think about overclocking if your worried about temps.
I can push my Q6600 to 3.6ghz stable. I don't really care for overclocking though, so I leave it at 2.4Ghz at all times. My temps are usually 43C idle and 55C load, and am using a Freezer 7 Pro with MX-2 Thermal paste.
[IMG]http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af32/Clabrendon1/Capture-4.png[/IMG]
but i never ever ever run at full load.
they are all around 72C at full load so i think i will leave it at that, and since i realised its basically 2.9 ghz (2.898) i think its fine. If i see the first sign of heat then i will lower it, but as far as i see im not that cautious :P
Its like strapping bubblewrapping to your baby JUST incase he gets hit by a car... :P
[editline]11:30PM[/editline]
i dont want to spend liek 20£ on a cooler, im leaving as is for now unless i come accross a nice deal.
[editline]11:31PM[/editline]
urm wait cpu z says core speed is 1932 mhz and 6 multiplier..
[editline]11:31PM[/editline]
Yeh somethings not right ill ss
[editline]11:35PM[/editline]
It keeps randomly going back to normal for like 5 seconds then going back to this
[IMG]http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/9623/uhoh.png[/IMG]
It's an energy saving feature, nothing wrong. If you want to turn it off you can do it in the BIOS.
So it goes back up when it needs to?
[QUOTE=derlicious;20964665]So it goes back up when it needs to?[/QUOTE]Yes. Mine does the same thing.
Ok i was worried that it had become instable or something along those lines. I've actually decided to get [url]http://www.ebuyer.com/product/198972[/url] and some MX-2 thermal paste
