• How powerful of a PSU do I need?
    26 replies, posted
I'm planning on upgrading my dated GeForce 8400GS to a newer 8800GT but my PSU probably won't be able to handle it. Is there a way to find out if my PSU can handle it? There is no sticker on the current PSU.
When did you get your computer, and what kind of parts do you have in it? Knowing that would give us a basic idea to start off of.
Full specs, I assume the PSU is a no-name generic one, as it doesn't have a sticker on it.

Total budget would be nice, too. I recommend you to get a C2Q q8400 or something similar, 2 extra GB RAM a new PSU and GPU. It might even make better sense replacing the whole thing. Save up 500$, and come back. Then we'll fetch a new build for you.

I'm only planning on upgrading the GPU and PSU.
It will probably be more cost-effective to just build a whole new machine. Save some money, the case (so long as it's some type of atx), the HDD(s) and the disc drive. If you're dead-set on just changing out the graphics card/PSU, yes you should replace the PSU before getting the 8800.
I ended up buying the wrong sized PSU. I'll give you guys the size of my case and you can tell me what form factor it is. [editline]9th April 2011[/editline] 48cm long 17cm wide 36cm tall
You'd only see marginal gains from the change in cards, so there really isn't any reason to upgrade now. You'd much much better off waiting until you've got more money saved up for a better card, or upgrade to your system in general.
The Inspiron 530 should be able to accommodate regular ATX PSU. Which PSU did you buy exactly?
Micro ATX  [editline]9th April 2011[/editline] It's got a custom case though, so I don't know if it'll fit.
MicroATX and ATX have the same PSU form factor, default Dell cases use BTX, which is a different form factor.
Well I posted the size of my current case, so will an ATX PSU fit?
MicroATX and ATX have the same PSU form factor, default Dell cases use BTX, which is a different form factor.
The The Inspiron 530 is ATX.
Well I posted the size of my current case, so will an ATX PSU fit?
The dimensions don't always mean a different form factor but the Inspiron 530 is ATX and the dimensions you described are that of a mini-tower case (just means its suited for a micro-ATX board). An ATX power supply should fit without issue. The problem is you said you purchased a PSU and it didn't fit, which is odd. It would help if you described how it didn't fit and what model you purchased.

I think I deserve a :ramsay: for this.
i bought corsair AX 750w and it IS awesome. recommended.
It was too small and the power socket was on the front, it has to be on the back. It was a CiT 500W Silent. I think I deserve a :ramsay: for this.
I just put up some more info for you guys.

That PSU should've fit no problem. Power socket on the front? It sounds like you were trying to put it in backwards.
:pwn: Uh what? That PSU should've fit no problem. Power socket on the front? It sounds like you were trying to put it in backwards.
Fuck. I've sent it back now. I deserve another :ramsay:.
A quality 400W would be able to run that. Also just buy a whole new computer, $600 will get you pretty far.
Fuck. I've sent it back now. I deserve another :ramsay:.
CiT is utter shit anyway

[editline]12th April 2011[/editline] That meets the power requirement.
