Im getting a new laptop in the mail in the next few days, I got it real cheap because it had vista on it. Thing is its got a 1gb vid card and 4gb of ram and has 32 bit vista on it. :geno:
I have a copy of vista x64 that I could install on it, but it also comes with an offer to redeem a free copy of 7. Problem is the copy of win7 is 32 bit.
So, the slower Vista x64 (might make up for speed with extra available ram?) or the faster 7 32 bit?
7 32 Bit FTW!
7 32-bit.
Just for comparison, when I had Vista on my system I had a boot time of 4 minutes. Since I installed 7 32-bit (but with a 64-bit processor), my boot time is now 50 seconds.
The key for the 32bit would work on the 64bit of the same edition. Microsoft should send you the 64bit with a proof of purchase or something.
That really depends on how you want to use it.
For stuff that takes up more resources like gaming, 64bit is certainly better. Thing is, i heard quite some bad things about Vista x64.
If it's just for some occasional surfing and not so resource demanding apps you should totally go for Win 7.

The offer is through redemption on samsung's site and they are only sending out 32 bit copies.
Check if there are 64 bit drivers for all your laptop stuff though. The raisin they don't offer 64 bit 7 might be because something doesn't support it. Or you can take a chance on the generic built in drivers.

Same, i'm actually quite suprised at how quick W7 is at booting.

The reason is that the company doesn't want to pay the extra $10 for the 64 bit version.
If you give Microsoft a call, explain the situation and ask for a 64 bit disk, they'll usually send one out for the extra $10 (Might be a tad extra for 7, I know it was $10 for Vista.)

yeah let's compare the boot times of used windows to a near fresh install
that seems an incredibly fair test

Not a fair test, but 7 is still way faster. Even after months in the beta, my 7 build was booting faster than my Vista ever did.

Unless my disk was nearly full and/or heavily fragmented and the registry fucked up around the "tests", the unfairness would be insignificant. But anyhow, I remember the boot times with Vista and they were never below 4 minutes even at the first couple of boots since install.
then you're doing something wrong because this install is a few months old already and it takes somewhere between a minute and a minute and a half
