Hey Facepunch, quick question regarding solid state drives. I'm looking to purchase my first SSD, and I really want to get this one from newegg:

However, there are two things that I'm uncertain about:
1) My motherboard only supports SATA II, will this significantly choke the SSD's performance? I've never used an SSD, will it make a difference from a regular hard drive even on SATA II?
2) Do SATA II cables differ from SATA III cables?
Help would be greatly appreciated.
1) Yes, the max speed you can get out of an SATA II controller would be around the 300MBps, and the Vertex 3 can reach speeds up to 525MBps
2) Nope, they are identical.
1) You'll notice a huge difference in performance up from a mechanical drive, however you won't be using the drive to it's full potential if using a SATA II motherboard.
2) Read: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/300583-13-sata-sata-cable and decide for yourself. I bought some SATA III cables just 'cause, but I have no idea if there's any increase in performance by using them.
Ok, thanks for the responses guys! Much appreciated!

The information in that topic is actually quite confusing, i've done some tests myself a while back and it makes NO difference what so ever between the cables, the reason the motherboard suppliers give you "SATA III" cables is to identify the port you've used without having to trace the cable all the way to the SATA port.

I don't think SATA cables are any different from SATA to SATA 3
