[QUOTE=Engadget]We all knew this would inevitably happen, but seeing it in action is something else -- the Kinect transformed by the power of open-source drivers into a true 3D video camera for capturing oneself. UC Davis visualization researcher Oliver Kreylos fed the streams from his peripheral's infrared and color cameras into a custom program that interpolated and reconstructed the result, generating a mindblowing 3D virtual reality environment he can manipulate at will. And if it makes him look a little bit like the proficiently penciled protagonists in Take On Me, that's just the cherry on top. Don't miss the videos after the break to see what we're talking about. Haha that's excellent!

It looks like the holograms in the Minority Report
wow, I almost want to buy a used one at gamestop just to do this
Now imagine if he had enough cameras placed to reconstruct his entire room.
I jizzed.
This is amazing
so is there a download link of the software?
While watching this I was thinking "he must be so lonely in that black void" but then I derped.
Get two of those and it would look even more awesome.
Fucking ninjas
totally getting like 10 of these and placing them around me
That's amazing. I wonder if it could be used to reconstruct whole rooms in 3D if you had enough of these.
Looks more interesting than its original purpose, for sure.
My god, that's amazing.
I couldn't stop thinking about how scary this would be if we made all cameras like these- security cameras, CCTV...
I was reading Gizmodo, and they said if there were more than one kinect IR Infrared camera, they would interfer. But if they figured out how to make them turn off, if they detect other infrared then it would work with multiple cameras.
Wow, this totally replaces the old fashion laser grid array scanner.
Google Maps 3D: Coming Soon to Xbox Live
Why didn't he show wireframe. I bet it looked like total mess

Sweet Jesus. Security Cameras that now have the ability to build a map of their area. No blindspots.
He needs to link 2 more kinect modules to have full coverage of the X Y Z coordinates.
So 3 of those and you've got a full 3d scene?
Can't wait until porn is filmed like this. No more waiting for the damn camera to get to the right angle. Just find it yourself.
Real life DX Ripping!
In all seriousness, I can't wait for Community made 3d Model scanners using multiple Kinects!

Totaly agree to that. Awesome post
oh shit, I'm enrolled at UC Davis right now! Awesome to see some tech developments from one of the top veterinarian schools in the country.

Surely you could have them all synced so only one is active at a time.
A bit late, but I'm thinking about buying a Kinect solely for this purpose.
Okay, now let's get 10 cameras around object and get full 3d video!

Not really.
If there is one camera on the side, one on the front and one on top, who will look on back, other side and bottom? You would need atleast 6 for full 3d.
Realistic penis models in Gmod.

You would get a more realistic model by modeling it yourself.
Whatever kinect outputs will be so unclean it will require tons of cleanup.
if i had the funds i could make a 360 degree kinect ball, on motors, to rotate around
