No, in Vitiligio the transition between the darker and lighter skin colors is much more abrupt, and the color diference is much greater.

I think it's happening because the color pigments are "packed together" on a smaller place in - like you put it - "Small Mode". When the skin is stretched, they're normally spread, when it's not, they get together on a smaller area and thus it looks darker.
For a stupid comparison, imagine a glass of water and you put a certain amount of watercolor from the tip of a brush into it. The more space the color has to spread thin, the lighter the color will appear. The less space it has, the darker/closer to its real color it will become.
