On idle my 4870 X2 is running at 81 degrees Celsius and even though I've read online that this card runs hot and that's just a fact of life, I have the fans turned up to 52%. Am I worrying over nothing or is there something I can do to make it run cooler without making the fans so loud that I can't even hear the music playing through my speakers?
Holy shit, You probably want to start by turning the fans up a lot. you could also invent in 2 expansion slot coolers and put them under both cards if there is enough slots between them. You may also want to get water cooling if your parts are that hot. How hot is your cpu?
that's normal for an X2
Maybe invest in a fan for it specifically?

You mean a cooler? Could you link me to one that you know of?
81c is fine for a 4870

the reason you can hear the fan so loud is because you probably have a ricer case
Are you in America? www.newegg.com there should be a few good 4870x2 coolers, and have you recently cleaned your heatsink? Dust can make it much less effective and create extra noise.

I don't know what you mean by "ricer", but my case is a Cooler Master Cosmos.
One small thing that might help a little is taking the cover off your computer case. I did this while watching my CPU temp. and i got a 5 degree difference, I'm not sure if it would help much, but you can always try. Also, turn the fans way up and make sure the heatsink area is clean.
If this doesn't work then i would recommend getting a cooler for it like the people above stated.
Good luck and have fun :D

It's okay, once he turns 14 he'll grow out of it.
