• Why are there no shooters where you play from the German side?

Games like Call of Duty, Medal of Honor all focused on the US, Russian side but i'm kind of wondering why there isn't a game in which you see the war or story from the German side. Yes they did bad things and we know how the war ended for them, but i would be really interested in playing there side of the war.
Red Orchestra 2
Because most people don't like the WW2 Germans, making it a lot harder for devs to make people who are generally 'bad guys' relateable to the player
People don't like to acknowledge that german soldiers were humans.
Red Orchestra 2
I assume he means for a single player experience. It's possible yes, but it would take time to make it marketable to people. They just won't like the idea that you play as a Nazi, as the main character. [editline]23rd February 2014[/editline] Same with the Imperial Japanese, especially in Korea and China. The only Axis member we could make a game out of that could be marketable, is a game where you play as an Italian.
It's a shame really 'cause I'd love this.

It would be a field day for congress.
You say that it wouldn't be marketable but I think it would be very popular BECAUSE of the fact that people aren't used to playing as the Germans and it flips everything on it's head. If they made a game that showed that WW2 Germans were as human as anyone else, but ended with them being killed I think it would be amazing and just because of the fact that it is controversial it would get a lot of media coverage or at least get a lot of gamers talking about it. Plus WW2 has been done to death from every other side, why not get a German POV game already.
I think it's less the part of portraying the Germans as good guys that's the problem; and more the part of portraying the Allies as bad. We've gotten past the every-german-soldier-was-a-terrible-person fad a while back, there's a couple of movies, TV series, books and such that portray the war from the German side. The thing that'd be hard for a wider audience would be justifying shooting Brits and Americans for no good reason. Soviets would be doable, maybe, kinda, sort of.
I assume he means for a single player experience.
But RO2 has a single player campaign for the German side, albeit somewhat limited, where you fight the USSR. I do agree though that there will never be a single player fps in which you play as the Germans against the western allies.
I'd think it's because no-one can take a game as 'just a game', so if you made something like that everyone would freak out about killing allies and being part of one of the worst armies ever and all that. It's just too touchy of a subject so unless you wanna deal with a shitnami tidal wave of offended people, it's better to walk away. Shame though.
Medic in TF2
you'd basically be unable to sell it in germany for one
you'd basically be unable to sell it in germany for one
I really find this weird that the Germans are so strict on everything nazi related. Hell, WaW had to censor the Nazi flags in Germany..... Really think that video games would make you want to be a 'nazi'(Not everyone in the Wehrmacht was a nazi most were drafted)..? But I'd love this, I love playing as Germany in strategy games... I'd love to play as a German soldier defending in Berlin or attack the Soviet Union(something that could sell very well) and potentially Fallshrimjagers. Or maybe in Africa. Opposing fronts did a very good job in aspect of an Axis campaign.
I'd love to see a game where you play as Hitler himself leading the Nazi army during WW2 and attempt to take over the world. The campaign of the Third Reich would be long and epic spanning numerous large battles and conquests. You'd also have to continue the Holocaust and manage the concentration camps. Of course in this game Hitler's suicide wouldn't have happened and there would be a happy ending where Hitler ends up taking over the world. I'd buy this.
Company of Heroes has a good single player campaign for the Germans. Of course its the RTS genre.
You could play Hearts of Iron 3 and play as Germany even though they cut out the holocaust and nazi flags.
Use a mod.
People don't like Germans

Not many people would though and this would be tied to the game company forever. They could make a happy game about rainbows and sharing and the media would flame it for being made by "Nazi sympathisers" or something.
Because a certain people would get very upset and would do everything in their power to prevent it from going mainstream. Especially if it the game shows sympathy for the Nazis.
You could play Hearts of Iron 3 and play as Germany even though they cut out the holocaust and nazi flags.
I can understand cutting out the holocaust but even the flags? That's a bit excessive imo.
The impact that the World Wars had is just a bit touchy, even to this day. It really left a hell of a hand print. Germans are just a relatable enemy for quite a lot because of that, among a few other things. Look at what Modern Warfare 2 did with "No Russian" and the stirring that caused. That game broke records, I think they should break the mold and finally do a German campaign. Whoever does it right would make a ton of money.
Because a certain people would get very upset and would do everything in their power to prevent it from going mainstream. Streisand's a bitch.
I can understand cutting out the holocaust but even the flags? That's a bit excessive imo.
Well, they put in the Imperial Germany flags but they don't like to put nazi things in their games. You can mod it with like replacing the file though.
Well, they put in the Imperial Germany flags but they don't like to put nazi things in their games. You can mod it with like replacing the file though.
They don't want their games banned in many different countries.
Unless they banned it from every country then I think they would just give it a bunch of negative attention, which in turn would make a lot of people play it. Streisand's a bitch.
The game would get so much negative attention that the publishers would be forced to drop the game entirely. With no monetary support, many of the developers would leave the team leaving only a handful to finish the game while indefinitely searching for a new publisher. This is what happened to a game by the name of Six Days in Fallujah: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Days_in_Fallujah
I sware in sniper elite V2 you get to sniper Hitler in a DLC
I see so much negative attention that the publishers would be forced to withdraw their funds from the game. In CoD:4/MW2 and the newer Medal of Honor games, you're shooting at arabs for at least part of the time. Plus, there are/were actual soldiers and Iraqi civilans that are helping out with this game.
