• Christmas is coming - Need advice for tablet purchase

Hello FP-Users. Here's the story, I've got my education and earn my first money since september. I'm finally able to make a big purchase for my familiy and luckily christmas is at the door. So I thought about getting a tablet PC for my father, but I don't want to pay a shitload of money so an iPad is already a no-go. But there are plenty of alternatives out there. I've read that tablets under 200 € are just not worth it. So the absolute maximum I'd pay is 300 €. I came across the Nexus 7 from Google and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus N Last one costs actually 500 but is reduced to 250 at the moment, but I don't know for how long. I need advice. Both run with Android as the OS, but Nexus 7 (and especially the Nexus stuff by Google) gets the latest updates (4.2) faster than any other products. The Galaxy Tab runs with Android 3.2 but has an expandable memory. He has a desktop PC and a laptop, so I'd like to buy him a 7" tablet, with little weight, to carry around and doing stuff on it. I'd rather buy him one so he can use it for work or just do normal stuff and not mainly to play games, although it's also nice to do so. Which one should I take or do you have any other good tablets to suggest?

Nexus 7. [editline]6th December 2012[/editline]
Nexus 7, just check it for defects on arrival.
With massive emphasis on this. If it isn't buttery smooth out of the box RMA it.
Nexus 7 I own one and am In complete love with it.
Thanks for the posts. Seems like many like the Nexus 7.
Don't sperg out on your parents. Just get them an iPad mini instead of something they'll never use.
Yeah, well, I dont want to pay 400 for it. And my father isn't a fan of the apple stuff too. If I don't find a cheaper version of the ipad mini, then it looks like I'm gonna get him the Nexus 7. Thanks.
Don't sperg out on your parents. Get the one that costs more so that way if they end up not using it, they wasted more money.

The GPU in the SoC is far ahead of the 412MHz mobile GeForce chip in the Tegra 3 which is important considering all the GPU acceleration in iOS. It has better tablet apps, and it runs smoother. I'm not disagreeing that for his budget the Nexus 7 is best, but you call it technically better with nothing to back that up, a trend I see with many of your posts.
Yeah I just got the Nexus 7, it's great.
The only problem I have with the nexus 7 screen is that the lowest setting is too bright.
It's a complete lottery as to what panel you get. I've seen some with sRGB coverage around 50%, and others above 85%. It has atrocious intensity scale calibration, and it only uses dithered "24 bit" color in the browser in the gallery.
The only problem I have with the nexus 7 screen is that the lowest setting is too bright.
You can get an app to reduce the brightness of the screen further
can't wait to get my nexus. it's on the way now.

But yah that is a good point to mention that they're better for the reason that you're actually using that screen real estate effectively.
ehehehehehe how can this be an argument anymore
Could you elaborate? The Nexus 7 doesn't keep at 60fps like iOS does. If you press the launcher button and swipe when the icons come in the animation is clearly not at 60fps. Scrolling through widget pages also causes this at times due to icons loading during the swipe. There are tons of areas where this occurs that just don't happen on iOS. As for tablet apps, sorry it's the truth. Scaling up phone apps is a bad solution. Look at all the wasted space when you just stretch an app meant for a 3.5" display to fit a seven or ten inch one.
I honestly don't see the problem with the scaling also, I haven't experienced what is apparently 'not as smooth' as iOS on android, both seem like fine platforms in that regard [editline]7th December 2012[/editline] just to clarify, I'm saying the better apps thing is bullshit because the appstore on either platforms aren't comprised of 1 application.
You don't see the problem... The problem is that you get the same amount of info as your 4.5" phone or whatever, but you have to hold a 7 to 10 inch tablet. It's a complete and utter waste. Look at Yelp, on iOS you can see info about a restaurant with a map and more detailed info on the right, while still having the list in a separate column on the left. You don't need to select one and have the app go to another page because it was built for tiny phones that can't fit much on a page. This occurs in lots of apps, it's just a matter of using the space effectively. If I want to see the info that Yelp displays on that Android tablet, I could just view it on my Galaxy S II and it'd look the same.
iPad mini is only 330€ on http://www.apple.com/euro/store/ Not sure where you're seeing 400
I saw it for 400 on Amazon.com. But it's good to see, that there are less expensive ones. Well, if I'm going to pay 300 anyway, I can get the ipad mini. I think it will be easier for my mom to use.

It's not a problem for most people. Stretched apps however do look bad in general, it's why most webpages are generally centered in the middle of the screen and not stretched to either side

The nexus 7 supports multiple users, I'm sure more than one person will use the tablet
