I too remember mining procedurally generated caves in space in Left 4 Dead.
4 player coop games are now all L4D clones
On an unrelated note to being the Dark Souls of Harvest Moon, I really don't like this "low-poly" look that a lot of indie games are going for, and I say that as a big fan of conventional low-poly.
It's like the 3D equivalent of those games where the pixel art are nine-pixel high stick figures without any real detail. It's just ugly and looks like a poorly made and unfinished mesh in Maya/3ds/Blender.

So is it both the L4D and the Dark Souls of Harvest Moon?

I actively work to avoid broken smoothing on my 3d models.
Why the living hell would I ever pay to look at broken smoothing?
4 player coop has existed generations before l4d
the mass effect 3 of bad writing
I like the idea of these coop shooters but they usually fail when you do not have a stable group to play with, furthermore I don't feel like having to team up with strangers and such. That's why I usually do not play these type of games anymore. But the concept sounds super nice.

But can i use their brand recognition to whore out my article for as many clicks as possible?

It's interesting that graphical capabilities have forever been pursuing photo-realism, until the indie scene where everything went back to pixel art. Now they're going to early polygonal stuff, and I have to wonder if in another 5 years we'll get photo-realistic graphic fidelity as the next "retro" indie look, and then be stuck going through decade long fashionable cycles of hi-res -> pixel art and back.
Personally I think this game looks pretty cool but that's an extremely shit way of describing it.
Just call it what it is, fucking space dwarfs mining shit and it's four player co-op.

They aren't going to early polygonal stuff. This doesn't look a goddamn thing like early polygonal stuff. This is its own unique brand of terrible.

Don't try to claim that L4D didn't revolutionize the concept.
Don't try to claim that L4D didn't revolutionize the concept.
It revolutionized swarm based and coop games, and a lot of things. No one did hordes of enemies as good as it, or had the feeling of a truly unexpected encounter. it had a shitload of pretty coop teamplay enforcing features too that hasn't really been expanded upon until then.
4 player coop isn't really a 'concept' that in and of itself can be changed much, since you just have to balance it around the number of people playing. it's not some thing that can be innovated upon.

You could easily have an L4D type game with 3 or 5 players max and it'd be the same game, just with different balancing.
L4D having 4 players is just where it was best balanced at.
Iv'e enjoyed what little iv'e seen of this in Youtube playthroughs.
I know its a joke at this point but I would genuinely be really excited if they announced a new L4D
