Ridiculous overexaggeration by children having a literal hissy fit; Firewatch is a fantastic gane.
well, i wouldn't call it an "overexaggeration". IMO Firewatch is a pretty good game but from what I know of the recent DMCA shit I suppose people should try to pressure the devs somehow, however abusing the Steam Reviews is absolutely the wrong place to do it.

Why are you defending the Firewatch developers for dmcaing pewdiepie's firewatch videos because
his mouth slipped. Yes, it's quite a bad word but it was an accident.

Because I care more about racism than I do about DMCAs; my mouth has never slipped and said that out loud, but then again I'm not a closet racist. Nobody accidentally says that word, especially a person with so much influence on a public stream, and if they do they need speech therapy or something.
Censorship is ok if you disagree with the person being censored

Disagreeing with this post instantly makes it ok to censor me
Censorship is ok if you disagree with the person being censored
"It's OK when we're doing it" is the biggest bunch of bullshit one could pull that'd just make them seem worse than those they're doing it against.
Pewdiepie's vids probably led to some people buying the games with free coverage. Soo.. kinda dumb.
tbh I have 0 idea's why they thought people would react to this positively
[editline]12th September 2017[/editline]
DMCA abuse is such a big issue on youtube lmao what did they expect

The exact same could be said about the Firewatch devs
The exact same could be said about the Firewatch devs
Hmm, Firewatch devs produce beautiful interactive content, "PewDiePie" just talks very loudly over it.

We get it, you hate PewDiePie.

I don't wanna defend PewDiePie or justify what he did in any way, but fraudulent DMCA takedowns are still unacceptable, and I don't want to support a company that is willing to brazenly and publicly flout the law.
We get it, you hate PewDiePie.
I dislike almost all of his videos, his core fanbase, his recent dumb stream blurb and his earlier persona too.
But even I can put my hatred aside for the real issue here, Namely abusing the DMCA for something it never was meant to be used for.

what's fraudulent about it
firewatch devs offer a blanket permission for people to monetize their game, this guy does something that's worth revoking that privilege, they file a DMCA complaint for their content being used in a way they don't agree with
I still love the game and hope they make something nice as their next project as well

Their streaming permissions is a Carte blanche, there weren't any strings attached, so at best they're in a dark grey area legally and just about a big bunch of dicks as PewDiePie morally, and worst case they're in for a court case.

How exactly is their content being used in a way which they don't agree with though? PewDiePie saying "nigger" had literally nothing to do with Firewatch in any way. He said it during a stream of a totally unrelated game. It's really difficult to paint this as anything but abusive by the Firewatch devs even if it was a totally retarded thing for PewDiePie to have said to begin with.
Edit: Or to put this another way: People on Facepunch always get up in arms over developers censoring negative reviews of their games. The underlying logic of this DMCA is the same but on even shakier grounds because the reason for the DMCA is totally unrelated to their game to begin with.
Because I care more about racism than I do about DMCAs; my mouth has never slipped and said that out loud, but then again I'm not a closet racist. When your principles are such that using a couple syllables can justify wrongful self righteous abuse of legal measures
So because the Firewatch devs are
abusing DMCA for personal reasons that don't directly involve the game or PDP's review of it
people are protesting by
abusing Steam reviews for personal reasons that don't directly involve the game or their experience with it?
I'm trying to give the mob some credit because I don't support the Firewatch devs' decision here, but this just seems like blind revenge because reviewbombing is more impactful than hashtagwars.
I think abusing Steam reviews is the wrong way to go about it (even if it's effective).
Literally everyone involved in this fucked up.

Isn't that the idea? To pick an option more impactful?
Isn't that the idea? To pick an option more impactful?
It's also ironic
I think abusing Steam reviews is the wrong way to go about it (even if it's effective).

The only winning move is to not get involved.
[editline]12th September 2017[/editline]
Shit I got myself involved

I think this is kinda kneejerk and portrays a complete blindness of what has been a part of deeper internet culture for a loooong time
Like, there's almost always been an element of shock value to internet culture, people have been calling each other n-words and f-words and it's just straight up because it's edgy and shocking with usually no racial connotations. I find using the n-word as a swear kind of tasteless and vulgar and if they're using it fucking constantly there's a legitimate cause for concern, but blurting it out in frustration while playing counter-strike absolutely does not have the same context as going "gee whiz i sure do hate me a nigger" at the dinner table.

I see what you mean for sure, but it's certainly a good way to have any impact on developers which typically don't care what people think, especially if they aren't making a game anytime soon so you couldn't just "boycott" their game (which probably doesn't work at all)
what's fraudulent about it

They offered a blanket permission, it says nothing about terms of use (you can't do x or y will happen,) it's just blanket legal permission to use their content in videos however they like. Now, after the fact, they want to go against their express public legal permission to use their content.
Here's a 10 minute video by the same lawyer explaining why he believes this is DMCA abuse.

Maybe fraudulent isn't the right term, but I have reason to believe this is still nonsense.

It's possible to condemn both.

DMCA's is hitting where it hurts for youtubers just like reviewbombing is for developers relying heavily on steam.
So the developers who are supposed to act like adults in these situations but went for childish maneuvers shouldn't be surprised when they get treated the same way.
It's both scummy maneuvers in this situation, don't get me wrong, but the dev's should've seen it coming when they decided to DMCA a unrelated video by someone who said a stupid racial slur in the heat of the moment during a game.
I care more about racism than I do about DMCAs
It's a Copyright Claim coming from someone who openly says "anyone can make a video of our game" striking a video that is more than one month old, even though the dude wasn't playing that game at all when this happened.
So basically Bill Gates is free to uninstall your windows because he didn't like one of your shit-tier posts in Facepunch forums and you'd be cool with that?
