Really hope this gets a free weekend some day
It looks pretty neat but I've heard some iffy things about it
It's good, great devs too

It's pretty great imo. And as bdd said the devs are great. Community asked for it to be moved to Unity 5, so they did. They listen to everyone pretty well. Most of the iffy things I've heard have come from people just joining random groups. It's really best when you've got a full squad of 4 people in voice chat.
Honestly, the iffiest part about it is the optimization, which has been getting better. And according to the last dev diary, they just brought on someone who's been working with Unity for years now, and is going to be helping with the optimization. Another thing to note about the optimization issues as well is that its really only on certain maps, the newest one, Aisne, runs like a dream but Flanders has a lot of issues and is the worst of them all.
Still, definitely worth a purchase, especially since they're still working on their Free DLC packs.
The updates posted in the News section of the Community Hub make me ecstatic! Not even Red Orchestra 2 has that much variety and polish. I didn't even know half the guns existed.
Anyone know if they've updated the squad system so Squads aren't perpetually stuck in pre 1915?
i played this game a while back and didn't care for it. tried it again more recently and i don't know if it is actually different at all but it is a damn lot more fun. really good WW1 game although i wish it would put more emphasis on the intensity of artillery barrages

What your squad looks like depends on its level, which you make higher by playing with the same people over and over.

Artillery Barrages is the same thing as Uniforms, as your Squad levels up you gain access to better Barrages (Mortar-Sector Artillery-Creeping Barrage).

You're probably just ending up against low level squads
If you're looking for a Red Orchestra experience but moreso played in World War 1, Verdun is the best one to go to. Free DLC packs and community updates are distributed always which is a score in my book.

But doesn't that reset once everyone in that squad logs off?

Nope. Squad progress saves as long as you're with the same people.

Yup, for example my friend and I are squad level ~65 or so. That list of "friends" playing when you launch the game are people you had been in a squad with once.
Oh ok, another question then. Does it have to be the same people or can some randoms join a pre-existing squad that is high rank?

yeah, if someone joined my friend and I's squad, we'd keep our squad rank.
Would not recommend this if you ever have ping problems at home. I tend to have clean, no-problem ping in every other game, but in Verdun it's rare to be below 400, and I'm not the only one with this.
Wait for them to fix servers.

I have shitty rural US internet and it's fone, are you sure you're not connected to the EU servers by mistake?
Found a game with semi-positive ping.
Got in a squad, a total of 15 people were crowded around me at game start, and we rushed forward to have all of us mowed down by 2 dudes with MG-08s
Legit would actually recommend the fuck out of this, just be prepared for weird FPS drops.
