I'd rather not see this happen. Valve has an excellent record on quality-control, and I wouldn't want to see Steam go fully public-controlled.
I'm not sure if this would be such a good idea since Steam is very much one of Valve's greatest creations, and the idea that other people can publish their own creations is great, but as mentioned in the article, one would have to worry about viruses and that can do some serious damage on Steam's image.
It's kind of awesome that he's willing to take himself and the company out of the equation to make something better
This is clearly the beginning of the end for Steam, time to burn everything to DVD and switch to Origin.
I say no. Valve's reputation is what keeps Steam roughly clean and quality. We'll see more WarZ and Revelations 2012 if they let anyone publish.
There would be virtually no quality control, it'd be like a worse version of the workshop.

Well, it's not spotless *coughcoughTheWarZcoughcough* but considering the number of people who bought that and 'enjoyed' it, I'm skeptical too. I think a better median could be found somewhere between Desura's model with a little bit of curation to remove joke products, viruses and scams but little else and Steam's current model with only (arguably) high quality, full games being put on. Greenlight, if it was tweaked quite a lot, could define it.
Just wait and see until other sites misinterpret this and create again bad reputation for Steam.
Personally I think everything they've brought out in this regard has been pretty cool:
o Steam Trading
o Workshop
o Greenlight
o Market
In some spots they need to work out the kinks, but overall I can't say I dislike the direction. To me it sounds worse on paper than it actually is.
edit:
I really doubt they'd disconnect Valve from Steam completely, they just want to make it community-driven and increase people's productivity from behind the scenes.
I dont think i would buy my games anymore on Steam if Valve left it :/
I'm a constant console gamer and I even love what Valve does. I respect what they do for PC. I really hope he stays with Steam. Steam and Valve are the only things that make me, the console gamer, play PC games.
(I understand PC gamers don't like console gamers, I really do, and I agree with their points on how it makes the PC gen create a setback for them. We make quality limited).
For me, this would mean a steam much like Steam as it is currently, with the infrastructure to support and market big releases while also making Steam more viable for miniscule independent studios, so users would still see big, grand releases on the front page, but alongside more games from tiny, unknown dev teams. Things that would get on Desura or GoG, but not on steam as it is now, if you catch my drift.
Riccitielo must be rubbing his hands sitting on his throne made out of dead developer's skulls saying "Ha ha, now is time to make our move!"
I still really strongly dislike steam, if it wasn't DRM I'd never ever use it.

How does this make any sense? Why do you like something for the DRM? I use it for keeping all my games on the cloud and for the friend network

I think you are misinterpreting what he is trying to say.
He is saying he dislikes Steam, but the only reason he uses it is some games force him to activate and play through Steam.
I don't want Valve to leave Steam, it's an okay system compared to Origin and the likes.
I left the console stuff because of Steam.
This is wrong on so many levels.
Steam is lacking from bad quality control. There are lots of games that shouldn't have been on Steam to begin with and then there are lots of games that don't get on Steam for reasons nobody knows (which is why they launched Greenlight which is a half-assed attempt).
Removing quality control altogether will just ruin Steam completely. Shit games, frauds and unrealiable information will enter the store to a way bigger extent than before and never be dealt with, Steam will just become shit.
It's just an idea they experimented with. I don't think they'll ever let 'anyone publish anything they want' on Steam.
But let's say that Valve, for example, no longer provides an official store front. Instead players provide their own stores in which they organize all available games and software how they want. Popular players / celebs would fetch money from people coming to their version of the store in which they promote games they like, or for which they made associated content (for example, Criken posts a GTA V video on youtube, and then links to his store front where people can buy the game).
I'm not saying it's a great idea, but it's still an interesting one. Gabe is talking about potential futures here, not changes that are carved in stone.

You're often forced to use steam if you want to play some games, even those which you bought in retail. And honestly if valve lets the community essentially control steam I decidedly would prefer off of it.
this sounds fucking retarded sorry

Some games shouldn't be on there because they're intentionally misleading and the devs are just trying to screw you over. And it's bs that other deserving games don't make it on when scams like that do. I find it frustrating, and I probably wouldn't use Steam anymore if I didn't find them so good at fixing things. I think that's one of their greatest strengths is that most of the time they'll do what the customers want, despite being DRM.
On removing Valve from Steam? Pft, he talked about a Whole bunch of other stuff too.
Valve has an excellent record on quality-control
Have you seen some of the games on Steam and also the ones that never made it on?
I dont think i would buy my games anymore on Steam if Valve left it :/
To be honest I don't buy much games on Steam as is, and if only talk about piracy was not forbidden I would name a few big-title games on it.
