give us a screenshot of Speccy http://www.piriform.com/speccy and ignore erp, only an idiot would buy 8GB RAM and an X6 for games
CPU performance is amazing when you overclock that (even without), though most games only use 4 cores, but when games start using 6 cores, you'll be ready. I can run some benchmarks with it, if you'd like. I also do video editing and modeling. Plus another 4GB (to my original 4GB) was only $30 more. Ignore reapaninja, he's an idiot assuming I only game
Isn't sandy bridge coming out tomorrow?

Except it works fine and when later games support hexacore processors, he'll be ready.
who gives a shit if it "works fine" when he could get something that suits the task better and they won't bother with >4 support on any sensible game for a while
yeah i do want a complete overhaul but i want it to last a couple of years until i can get a job
who gives a shit if it "works fine" when he could get something that suits the task better and they won't bother with >4 support on any sensible game for a while
Black Ops supports up to 8 cores, Flight Simulator X supports 8 cores, ARMA II 8 cores, Medal of Honor, Civilization 5. You're really misinformed. ummmmm
Black Ops supports up to 8 cores, Flight Simulator X supports 8 cores, ARMA II 8 cores, Medal of Honor, Civilization 5.
would love to see some sources for that

i still need a good motherboard and processor
phenom ii x4 955 4gb ddr3

None of them are coded for 6 threads though. The performance increases that the article saw were a mere 10% increase and on top of that it wasn't 100% thread usage. If you are looking for games coded to utilize up to 6 threads, you won't find any. If you are looking for games that can use up to 6 cores, just pick one, 90% of them do. Maybe all of them do for that matter.
[editline]8th January 2011[/editline]
i still need a good motherboard and processor
depends on your budget but you're better off just leaving it and getting a new system
better off buying a new comp? ok [editline]8th January 2011[/editline] better get studying on PC building then
Well, put simply, an AM3 Athlon II 250, 2GB of DDR3, and a motherboard to support it cost me £120, and couple that with a £40 Graphics card and £30-£40 PSU, and you've got a pretty solid pc for Source games, as mine runs at a near constant 100+ FPS on all source games. You don't want to overkill on the RAM, nor other stuff, especially if it's older technology like DDR2.
phenom ii x4 955 4gb ddr3
This is a good way to do it. The AMD Phenom II x4 955 is a great processor for most gaming builds, not to expensive, but a good performer and can be overclocked well. And 4GB DDR3 is a given nowadays.
To be honest, I can't suggest anything currently. All I can say is that the following rig has been servicing me damn well for the past 7 months. Going back to it, what I would change is get a motherboard that supports triple-channel RAM, and maybe invest a bit more in the GPU department (as in go with nvidia, but that's a personal choice, because ATI Linux drivers suck).
