When Windows Live SkyDrive first launched in 2007 (known as Windows Live Folders beta back then), it offered a mere 500 MB of free storage. Later on when the service got out of beta in early 2008, this free storage space increased from 500 MB to 5 GB. This doesn’t seem to be a lot today, but it was probably sufficient for most people back then (and hey, that’s still more than what offers for free today). In November 2008, together with the launch of Windows Live Wave 3, SkyDrive’s free storage space increased from 5 GB to the 25 GB it offers today. This storage space hasn’t changed since then, but the usage of SkyDrive has been increasing since then. Office Web Apps was added to SkyDrive (with Office 2010 integration), and the service also became the storage space for large Hotmail file attachments. With the introduction of Windows Phone last year, SkyDrive also became the single point of storage for all synchronised photos and Office document from the phone. We expect SkyDrive usage to skyrocket once it adds support for other devices such as Windows, iOS, Mac, and Android, and the current storage limit definitely won’t meet the needs of Microsoft’s “all in with the cloud” plan. So in order to satisfy the demands of the “cloud” generation, Microsoft needs to move forward, particularly in terms of cloud storage space. LiveSide recently learnt that Microsoft will soon offer unlimited photos and Office documents storage on SkyDrive Wave 5, and this is how it will work:
Unlimited storage space for all Office documents Unlimited storage space for all photos 25 GB of free storage for everything else
No specific details are revealed as to when this will be made available, but as usual we believe this will be “coming soon”. Remember though, providing unlimited storage for is not an easy task, and it takes time for Microsoft to get it ready for the masses. However, we hope Microsoft do move fast, given Google’s “GDrive” might be making a comeback, and other competitors like Dropbox are growing at a rapid pace. There’s lots more news to come relating to SkyDrive and Windows Live. But in the mean time, remember to also check out our previous SkyDrive Wave 5 coverage: • SkyDrive client apps coming for Windows Phone, Windows, iOS, Mac, and Android • Windows Live SkyDrive Wave 5 to get devices integration • SkyDrive Wave 5 to finally support multiple files selection
Source: http://www.liveside.net/2011/09/10/coming-soon-to-skydrive-wave-5-unlimited-photos-and-documents-storage/
Is the unlimited storage space for photos and office documents free?
Is the unlimited storage space for photos and office documents free?
Yeah. It'll be more useful when they finally get client side apps though.
I bet this could be easily exploited by saving files as .jpg and .doc on the skydrive, just have it as say game.exe.doc
I bet this could be easily exploited by saving files as .jpg and .doc on the skydrive, just have it as say game.exe.doc
They might start making some file content checks to make sure your file is actually of that type.
They might start making some file content checks to make sure your file is actually of that type.
so just put the header of a .doc on with notepad++ or the like and take it off when you want to use it
Microsoft is really changing their image. iCloud looks pretty stinky in comparison. Now, if Microsoft made it like dropbox, it would be really useful.
Microsoft is really changing their image. iCloud looks pretty stinky in comparison. Now, if Microsoft made it like dropbox, it would be really useful.
As soon as they get some decent client applications it'd be just like it I assume. That's the only major downfall of SkyDrive. It's web-accessible only (with the exception of Office and 3rd party applications like SDExplorer).
They might start making some file content checks to make sure your file is actually of that type.
sounds illegal [editline]11th September 2011[/editline] So is this going to be similar to dropbox?
If they're trying to compete with DropBox and other similar services, then I think they're a bit late with this. Just like Bing was late to the search engines' club. For some reason I think they're going to implement this in Windows 8 somehow.

they already have 25 gigs free, I love it
this is why I love my Windows Phone. the quality on SkyDrive may be shit but it's so convenient
Does it still restrict me to a maximum size of 50MB per file? Jest checked, 100MB per file now. So still pretty fucking useless to me.
So is this going to be similar to dropbox?
You do know Microsoft made Live Sync (used to be live Mesh) right? It is essentially the same as Dropbox AND syncs to Skydrive.
Use that trick to add .rar files to a .jpg Free storage for anything
Use that trick to add .rar files to a .jpg Free storage for anything
IDK when you have a 100mb picture of your cat they may start thinking something's up :v:
IDK when you have a 100mb picture of your cat they may start thinking something's up :v:
I think that they don't have the time to look at everybody's cat pictures.
I think that they don't have the time to look at everybody's cat pictures.
What is your cat is a fucking badass like my cat? Can't risk it man.
Just save your stuff in .rar 100 mbps each, change the file.extension to .jpg
Awesome I love skydrive and mesh.
I bet this could be easily exploited by saving files as .jpg and .doc on the skydrive, just have it as say game.exe.doc
One can store rar archives inside of images
Just save your stuff in .rar 100 mbps each, change the file.extension to .jpg
megabits per second?
megabits per second?
Yeah, it's a new kind of RAR that transfers data to itself at megabit speeds!
Microsoft is really changing their image. iCloud looks pretty stinky in comparison. Now, if Microsoft made it like dropbox, it would be really useful.
Maybe migrate it into Win8 as a simple network drive?
this will be useful to me as a photographer!
