I currently have a 8800GT and need a new graphics card. Budget: about $700 Games that i play: GTA IV, Crysis, Left 4 Dead, Far Cry 2 Native resolution of my monitor: 1920x1200, its nice if i can connect my old 1280x1024 monitor too CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3 PSU: Will probably get a 750 PSU upgrade RAM: 4GB DDR2 800MHz I've looked at the GTX285, and it seems good. I've found a EVGA GTX285 "SSC" 2GB (edit: for like $650), and i don't really know if 2GB vram is worth it. Oh, and by the way, i have the Antec 900 case if you need to know. Please, give me advice.
GTX 295 if you have 700$ :v:
GTX 295 if you have 700$ :v:
Oh, I want to avoid dual graphics cards, theres so much problems with them, it generates much more heat, and so on
700$ on a graphics card? are you mad? but then again your rig doesnt look like you have anything else to upgrade to. maybe get the 285 and save the rest for something like a laptop or something for college n shiz \:v:/ [editline]02:20PM[/editline]
Oh, I want to avoid dual graphics cards, theres so much problems with them, it generates much more heat, and so on
a gtx 295 isnt a dual graphics card there is one graphics card but 2 GPU's inside it wont be like a Sli setup, the antec 900 should keep it cool

Yes it only needs 1 PCI express slot, and dont worry bout it being 2.0 it WILL work in the slot,
Is it going to work with non-SLI motherboard?
Dual graphics would mean SLI, dual GPU would mean no SLI needed. It's basically like a dual core processor. :v:
Yes it only needs 1 PCI express slot, and dont worry bout it being 2.0 it WILL work in the slot,
Really, so the motherboard can really manage a GTX295, cause its pretty low-end
Isnt it based on SLI or something?
Yes it will work you might have to rearrange the harddrives position up or down if the gtx 295 is in the way but other than that it will work. also what connectors are on your PSU? make sure there is a 6pin and a 8pin to plug the gtx 295 power in I will a have look for a PSU on newegg for ya, [editline]02:31PM[/editline] this PSU looks like it is enough for the gtx 295 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371026
Dual graphics would mean SLI, dual GPU would mean no SLI needed. Whether you've already got the dual PCB card or you're holding off for the single PCB...it has two separate GPUs. SLI is still there, but it takes place internally.

Yup
So the GTX295 handles SLI internally, rather than the motherboard?
Sort of, It's really not SLI though... It's just like some servers that have 2 actual physical processors. Infact no that analogy sucked... That's the same as SLI would be :P Umm, I don't really know how to explain it... Either way you won't have a problem with it.
I think a GTX285 is enough for pretty much anything anyway...

It still relies on the driver profiles and whatnot, just like standard SLI. Same applies to something like the 4870X2 using internal CF.
Get a 4870 X2. The $150 between a 4870 X2 and a GTX 295 is NOT worth it.

The 4870 X2 has no issues with microstuttering or increased heat whatsoever. This is from both reviews, the experience of others, and personal experience.
Why? I know they get hot, but Nvidia has released a new design for the 295 so it is no longer a toaster, besides a few extra case fans, some cable management, and possibly a PCI cooler, would cool your case down fine. If you are 100% not getting the 295, get a 280/285.

Why not just get a 4870? I don't have one, but I'm planning on getting one if I upgrade this year. There's an XFX HD4870 on Newegg for $135. It seems good based on its benchmarks, and I know you'll be able to play GTA4 and Far Cry 2 on that. I've got practically the same specs (Q6700, 4GB of RAM, 8800GTS) and I can run GTA 4 on all low and 1440x960 and Far Cry 2 on Medium, both at a playable framerate.

I'm normally very ATi but I'm not to sure about the higher level cards. And the the 4870 1GB is the ATI equivalent to the 260, but the 4870 is (very slightly) better and is generally cheaper.

Just get a 4870 X2.

OP, unless you like wasting money, please don't get a GTX 295. The cheapest 295 on Newegg is $510. The cheapest 4870 X2 is $380. Unless $130 is really burning a hole in your wallet, don't go 295. The performance difference just isn't there.
Just get an effing GTX 295 and shush. If you have enough money to buy the best graphics card available, why don't you?
The 4870 X2 has no issues with microstuttering or increased heat whatsoever. BECAUSE IT'S A WASTE OF MONEY THERE IS NO REASON TO BUY IT ALSO THE Q6600 WILL MAYBE PROBABLY BOTTLENECK IT caps
The performance difference between a 4870 x2 and a GTX 295 is so minimal, you wouldn't notice it in any modern games. Even on games like Crysis, you'll only see a difference of about one FPS.
