A few minutes ago I just got a call from someone at the "Windows International Centre" saying that "their systems had found I had downloaded junk and other malware and that it needed sorting out". I wasn't quite sure if I heard correctly, so again, I asked where he was from, said the same place.
I then said I used linux, cue stuttering and a bunch of garbage and then I hung up. Did a "1471 (ie gets the last number that dialled to our number) and the number was 01220 which to me makes zero sense (I live in the UK, and I've never actually heard of a number being that short in most places of the world either).
So my question is, has anyone else ever recieved one of these? And I suppose for anyone in the UK, it's also a warning that you might get called with something similar to this.
Edit: Sorry, left out the detail that he also knew my Surname (which I suppose wouldn't be hard to find, but eh).
:tinfoil:
01220 is the area number, there should be 6 more digits after that, you should always get 5 digits for the area number, and then 6 for the device
Just looked up list of UK dialing codes; 01220 is now unused, used to be used for Cambridge. Strange
Maybe one of your friends pulled a prank on you? Seems like he was using VoIP(Voice over IP) for it. Basically you can use Skype, and the one you're calling will never find out who it was, because not even the IP is showing.
Such department does not exist, and Microsoft would never contact you over phone for those bullshit reasons. Plus, they cannot find out your personal information or would care that you personally have downloaded a malware over your usage of the operating system. Microsoft would be sued long ago for invasion of privacy, if they have the ability to obtain personal information in such manner
Prepping for this. Can't wait to question him on my Gigajoules.
I know how many numbers are in a UK phone number :v:. What surprised me is that there weren't any after. Those were the only digits and I checked again to ensure that. Most of my friends don't know my home number (only my mobile or skype #).
I also know that department doesn't exist. However it was just odd more than anything to recieve a scam call like this.
I would've just went off and started saying how great mac osx is.
I wish people would try to scam me. Seems like I could have so much fun
I would've just went off and started saying how great mac osx is.
why would you lie like that

No need for Sarcasm.
He used a VoIP service that has bought the 01220 area code. Probably there's a setting to disable showing of your phone number, you can do that with mobile phones too.
Don't know how the UK phone system works so it probably still shows the area code even if you disable showing your phone number.
He used VoIP.

Thanks for the idea!
Even my mom knew not to fall for this stuff. The guy was using skype most likely (123-456-7890). I wish I had answered, I would have loved to mess with the guy.

This is probably how he did it. However if you withold your number, it usually witholds the entire number. Never thought about voip :v:
