• AMD 6970 DirectCU II overheating severely
    4 replies, posted
Just fitted a brand new Asus 6970 DirectCU, opened a couple of benchmarks along with a few games (not all at once obviously) and within seconds the temperature soared to well over 100C with artifacts appearing soon after. Both fans were quickly at 100%, but made fuck all difference. It's currently idling at 65C, and for some reason only Asus SmartDoctor and HWMonitor can read the temperature and fan speed (nothing on Speccy or Everest). What do?
RMA it if you can, sounds like a faulty card
Just took a close look at it, and the heatsink/fan assembly had actually come detached from the card somehow. Probably due to the courier; the box was pretty badly damaged when it arrived. But anyway clipped back on and it's hitting 60C under full load, and seems to not have sustained any permanent damage from running with no heatsink. Edit: 98C under furmark load, seems a tad high for such a good cooler. Will see if I can do anything more to the HSF.
Can't remember if Asus lets you remove the cooler and keep the warranty if they do, take the cooler off, clean thermal paste off and apply fresh paste if they don't, RMA it
RMA.
