It looks okay to me, except the background and few textures. Backgrounds look very off, and acid/liquid textures don't look good either.
Did they just use waifu2x for all the sprites lol

I don't remember the classic DOOM maps all that much but IIRC that's supposed to a DOOM II Earth level to be fair.

The bigger problem is a fundamental one: your texture work can only do so much.
This is why I dislike HD mods. Most of them increase detail in the textures only, and by "increase detail" I mean add noise. So what you're left with is low-poly sandpaper weapons and enemies.
The next problem is the fact that it's "HD" by arbitrary standards. You can add more textures, but what about polys? You can add polys, but what about shaders? It becomes kind of a downward spiral to lunacy that distracts from the game itself.
With that said, I'm all for people making [I]improvements[/I]. And when it's worded as such, I have more faith that the developer is sane.

looks like a cross between doom 64 and quake

it looks way better because it doesn't just apply big strong muscled textures, and adds actual graphical features to it
all you need to do would be to sure up the tiles and then it'd look fantastic
