What do you think makes a Lets Play video good and or bad? I don't really understand Facepunch's hate towards them as generally they're not actually that bad, or is it because there is so many people who do them?
A good let's play knows what he's doing, doesn't have a facecam and is informative. A bad let's play is screaming, blind playthrough, inefficient play time (game grump's sonic 06 is a prime example of this), facecam, etc.
a good lets play doesnt exist a bad lets play is every lets play in existance
I personally think that a good let's play is one that is either entertaining, genuinely funny (not the shitty rape jokes) and not completely scripted, or one that is informative, tells a lot about the game and shows off the cool stuff about the game. [editline]23rd July 2013[/editline] Usually the best let's plays are playing non-linear games (Open World or just playing user-created maps) [editline]23rd July 2013[/editline] Or it could just be really cool, like some of Dsylecxi's let's plays. i don't think lets plays are inherently bad, they're just the popular thing and a lot of people think they're easier to do than they really are. the only gameplay channel i keep up with regularly is game grumps, i think egoraptor is a really cool and genuinely funny guy (and so is everyone else on the show) and him and danny sort of approach game grumps like improvisational comedy, using the games as a backdrop and source of material
When the caster isn't actively learning English.
When the game isn't Minecraft. Also, it would be good if the let's player wasn't all "UUUHHH HEY GUYS UUH WE'LL BE PLAYING UH MINECRAFT YEAH UHHH CAKE IS A LIE TEEHEEHEE IM SO UHHH ORIGINAL"
Meh, I would think most people watch Let's Plays for the person doing the video, not entirely the game itself. The only Let's Play videos I watch are the ones that James and Mike do (The James that does AVGN) If you're interested
A good Let's Play is high-quality-recorded, entertaining and informative. A bad Let's Play is low-quality recorded, boring and disjointed. Most are in the gray zone. However, a perfect Let's Play is, when you play the game yourself.
A good voice can make an LP, like Grimith's deep, dulcet tones. Though, his personality being an intriguing balance between "this dude is fucking awesome" and "this dude is batshit insane" may also contribute to my liking of him.

Someone else mentioned blind LP's are bad but I completely disagree. Because it's the person I'm watching the LP for and not the game, I prefer when it's genuine reactions to things and not some faked surprise etc.
Usually its a person who makes a Lets Play great. He should be witty, have a great voice, some defining characteristics, and genuinly enjoying what he is doing. Being competent at the game also helps, but its not that crucial as one might think. An example of this kind of person is Northernlion.
I think Chip & Ironicus's lets plays are a really good example of HOW to do a lets play.
Some one who sounds like he is enjoying what he is doing, not some droning voice talking over the game play.
Have a good time playing the game.
a good lets play doesnt exist a bad lets play is every lets play in existance
ResearchIndicates Let's Play of JP: Trespasser would like to have a word with you.
The person doing the lets play must actually pay attention to the game and actually try and play it. Half the game grumps stuff is them running in circles because reading is too hard
I personally only really like spike and barley's LP's because they so silly playing and talking together, it just makes it enjoyable to watch whatever is on their plate :v
A good let's play is one where you find the person playing entertaining. A bad let's play is the polar opposite, whether the person be boring or annoying.
Example of a bad let's play:
Good: Interesting Informed on the game Video/sound at a good quality Good speaking voice - this one is probably number one for me, i'll stop watching immediately if i can't listen to them for 5 minutes.
no commentary
A good voice can make an LP, like Grimith's deep, dulcet tones
Exactly. Having a nice voice is half the battle in making a good LP For example, Cr1tikal (while not necessairly an LPer by proper definition) combines his deep ass-voice with his odd sayings and mannerisms to provide the best game commentary ever In addition, being British as fuck, such as for example, relatively mildly famous LPer, Kikoskia, never hurt nobody
If the LPer is playing a game with a large focus on the story, I hate it when they skip through dialogue, skip cutscenes, or talk through cutscenes. That stuff is alright for games where the plot isn't important, when you're speedrunning, or if the dialogue is known to be shitty... otherwise it's probably one of the reasons I'm watching the game in the first place. It's also especially frustrating when someone is skipping dialogue and tutorials and such and then ending up confused and mad at the game because they don't understand what to do next because they were too fucking dumb to read any of the hints. Secondly, I don't like when the LPers voice is significantly louder than the game. I'm often more interested in hearing what's going on in the game and hearing the game music than hearing heavy breathing. Something that will make me instantly abandon a Let's Play or a Stream of a game is if they're playing their own music rather than letting you hear the game music. Quite frankly, it really ruins the atmosphere, and more often than not, you probably have shit taste in music anyway.
You guys are clearly confusing playthroughs with let's plays.
You guys are clearly confusing playthroughs with let's plays.
May be. I suppose I feel the best game for let's plays are the ones that don't rely much on a plot that you need to follow.
May be. I suppose I feel the best game for let's plays are the ones that don't rely much on a plot that you need to follow.
Not really, Chip & Ironicus's Metal Gear Solid let's plays are really good I've heard and those games are super plot centered. Sure if the watcher hasn't played the games beforehand he won't have the "best" experience but that's now what let's plays were initally even for. Most let's plays nowadays are really playthroughs, which are just some guy who has never played the game doing a more laid back comedical commentary. Then there's longplays which are like super let's plays, they usually complete the game 100% with commentary.
Bad LP - on Blind LPs doesn't do checks on audio levels/mouse sensitivity/keybinds whatever - doesn't do anything you couldn't do on your own (screaming at monsters etc) - responds to community "critique" (ermagawd u didn't loot craet) in every other video or is constantly whining and bitching about something. Not what (most) people tune into. - long intros or outros - impulsive need to talk over cutscenes even when there's no joke/interesting remark to be made - lolrandom uh uhm ah err like comment subscribe!! Good LP - adds something to the experience (a fun personality, good jokes, interesting background information or analysis) - either has a great sense of pacing, has a crapload of entertaining material in his head, or edits - delicious sexy honey voice
First of all, if you're going to scream all the time and tell shitty jokes, don't even think about making a let's play. Don't be a Pewdiepie or a Markiplier is what I want to say.
One of the Polish Let's Players actually made a special video for reaching 1k videos on his channel - "11 things which shouldn't be done when making Let's Play's". Let's just say that my opinion is his opinion (except I made up my opinion long before the video). - When doing games in other language than the LP'ers audience, not trying to tell what has been said or not trying to translate. (That's in case someone from the audience doesn't know English/other language very well). - Doing Blind Let's Play's (also just to show off bought stuff). It's better to just resort to using livestreams for that. Also, a sidenote that unboxing is stupid - it's just showing off what you've just bought. - Making intros. It just takes away time and is downright a stupid idea. - Facecam is useless. You're just sitting there and playing - what's there to watch? It's not a vlog, it's a Let's Play. - Overusing curse words. Or just plain using them for the sake of using them. - Not ending the series. You know, you start making a series from a game, and then BAM! "nah dat game is boring im not gona play it anymor" - Straight forward not giving a shit about viewers. There should be some critique, some contact. - Overusing single words and repeating them. - SCREAMING JUST FOR THE SAKE OF SCREAMING. - Not saying ANYTHING about the game that is being LP'd/instead talking about oneself's life and irrelevant things. Most important thing: - not wanting to record Let's Plays, doing it like you were being forced, not showing any emotions in the video. If someone wants source, click here (warning: video is in Polish only, no subtitles, also fedora alert, but luckily he's not a neckbeard nor a brony).
