I'm looking to get a good gaming laptop for about $1100-$1300.
I'm not worried about special additions like Bluetooth or a high quality battery. Also hard drive doesn't need to be over 500gb.
Anyone have any advice or know what laptop I should get? I would also prefer a nvidia card.
now you probably have a reason to want a laptop, but i'll ask anyways. do you really want a laptop?
College
I went to Best Buy one day and saw this thing and it was a beast.

It's big and heavy but if you don't mind that it's pretty awesome.
Actually I think they were selling the 17" version for the same price.
How good is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M?
Would I be able to play something like Crysis?
On this kind of performance: http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-460M.33612.0.html
G73JW (17.3" version): http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-G73JW-Notebook-GTX-460M.37056.0.html
G73SW (same as the above, except with i7 2630QM, and apparently the best because less noisy and runs cooler): http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-G73SW-Notebook.45917.0.html
The G53 series are not really good in comparaison because of their smallest cooling system, but otherwise they are exactly the same

Though in my opnion, you will be clearly fine with a good high-end multimedia laptop, if you accept to play Crysis and Crysis 2 on 1366x768/1600x900 resolution with high/medium settings
Generally stuff from Asus tends to be the greatest as far as laptops go, gaming or non. I love my gaming laptop, but don't get one if you plan to plant it in one spot for long periods of time. Just get a desktop in that case.

Well that one is kind of out of my price range. Would it be cheaper to get a custom one built?
Look like it's the best deal to have: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246094 (850$ - i7 2630QM - Radeon Mobility HD 6570M - 4GB DDR3)
The HDD is only the downside of this laptop (only 5400 rpm instead of 7200)
are you REALLY REALLY sure you want a laptop?
because you're gonna be PISSED OFF at yourself when you buy a laptop and end up using it as a desk PC. and then you happen to not have any money, so the extra $700 you blew for making it a laptop would be really nice for food money.
and then in a year you realize it can't play any good games.
I have the ASUS G53JW and it works fine. I though about getting the G73JW, but then I read about the multiple issues that people are getting with the G73, so I went with the G53. They are identical in specs, but the size is the only difference, and its not much. The cooling is exactly the same, the really main difference between the G53 and G73 is size of the unit and the screen size.
I really don't think you want a laptop.
Use those $1200 dollars to build a monster full tower.

Have you ever considered that OP is maybe living in different locations?

Oh yeah obviously if he spends his life outside then he should take his laptop with him so that he can sit with a computer outside rather than inside that makes him better
While talking about laptops. My dad and I had to move to an apartment due to losing our house and we don't have room for a computer anymore. Would anyone mind helping me find a laptop to buy? My dad and I will be using it, my dad for his paperwork and me for my gaming. The only things i really play are source games and league of legends.
I'm definately going to need a laptop. I am going to be traveling and sitting at different colleges.

Should be okay for your budget (if below 650$)
[editline]19th May 2011[/editline]
Otherwise you should tell your budget

Well my dad spent on $1000 on a laptop which gfx card wasn't good. and I told him to return it and go buy this one: http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=prod3330177&navAction=push
Don't know if this actual serie of HP laptops has still the same overheating problem.
On the doubt, you should go with ASUS instead (like N53SV series) or any other brands, such as MSI or Samsung
I've always hated HP.. Had so many problems with them.
The laptop my dad bought from costco was a samsung. It had 6gb ram and a nividia gt (forgot the number) gfx card. But when I went to canyourunit, it didn't pass the mininum to play League of Legends. It had to pixel shader or something like that I forgot, had a long day yesterday :P
I have found it! http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/laptops/NP-RF511-S03US this is the one we currently have.
which is better between the 2 graphics wise:
