Didn't Gabe just say that their profits have been growing steadily every year? How odd.

No reason to have game developers anymore.
All they need is modelers to make more tf2 hats.
God has forgotten us.

Like the article says, it's more about the direction of the company than anything else.
Bit shitty that people lost their jobs but if they didn't fit into where Valve is heading then I guess there's not much that could be done.

Either something went wrong, or something big is coming that might need monetary backing, or they just had too much people for nothing.
Who knows.
Is it just me, or Gabe has been acting a bit weird lately?

They don't even need the modelers because the community does it for them, valve really set up a nice system for themselves.
Gamasutra has confirmed that multiple people had been let go from the hardware and Android departments.
At least it was partially just the mobile phone department and not the core development team or anything incredibly important.
Not to say it's a shame that those people had to be let go, but still.

To be fair the industry is half way through either imploding or being turned into a cash cow, so I can imagine they are branching out into a lot of new avenues that seem a bit alien compared to Valve's history.
HL3 is done and they are no longer needed.
They were all beard experts helping him craft his final product
Valve makes radical decisions either for good or bad, that's the way they roll. Anyways I believe this is some sort of strategic decision that I wouldn't be able to really understand concocted by them because they seem to know what they are doing.
First Valve say they want to leave steam, now, many people have left/been fired.
What's happening?

They just fired the people in the hardware departments, so it might be that the Steambox will never see release.

For starters, Bay Raitt left.

HL3 confirmed for android.

Or they'll get other companies to make them instead. I remember Gabe said they'll make their own hardware "if they have to", well maybe they don't and decided it's not worth it.
As for the Android department, maybe things just weren't going well there, after all we haven't seen any Android games from them yet, the only Android thing I know of them working on is the Steam app and that's it.
I have a feeling they want to ditch all the extra stuff and concentrate entirely on PC game development. We may see them sell off steam or something big like that.

Hmm. Interesting, I hope Valve responds.
First Valve say they want to leave steam
Gabe never said he wanted to "leave steam". He said he hoped to turn it from a store-like model into a more nebulous Social Network model, with everything being let on and with people effectively running their own little stores within this network, so reviewers would be getting a cut of sales for encouraging people to buy games and -as with the rest of valve- Gabe doesn't get a final say in anything. If nobody at Valve wants to join his team for reforming steam then there's not much he can do about that.
In relation to this, I have a feeling that perhaps something either very beauracratic or very personal caused this. So maybe the team weren't working hard enough or were demanding more pay when their work didn't match up or something, perhaps Gabe saw the project as being of little use or perhaps he's found a way to streamline it. Whatever it is, I hope we get to hear an explanation.
I'm thinking they don't want to be as big as they are, plus they probably want jack of all trades since working there practically requires you to be.
I'd be absolutely butt-mutilated to lose a job at Valve ;_;

Damn, I spoke to him a few years ago about machinima and directing! Cool guy.

I would be happy to be able to put Valve software on my CV.
Oh great... They're probably getting ready to split themselves off from Steam and what not after Gabe hinted at it during the interview at UTA.
(Personally, I think it's a bad move.)
UT. UTA is the one unfortunately located in Arlington.
Being Optimistic: They fired all the guys who were holding Episode 3 back.

Sell Steam? What idiot would do that? Right now it's nothing less than a money factory.
