FreeBSD is an advanced computer operating system used to power modern servers, desktops and embedded platforms. A large community has continually developed it for more than thirty years. Its advanced networking, security and storage features have made FreeBSD the platform of choice for many of the busiest web sites and most pervasive embedded networking and storage devices.
ReactOS® is a free open source operating system based on the best design principles found in the Windows NT® architecture (Windows versions such as Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows Server 2012 are built on Windows NT architecture). Written completely from scratch, ReactOS is not a Linux based system, and shares none of the UNIX architecture.
The main goal of the ReactOS® project is to provide an operating system which is binary compatible with Windows. This will allow your Windows® applications and drivers to run as they would on your Windows system. Additionally, the look and feel of the Windows operating system is used, such that people accustomed to the familiar user interface of Windows® would find using ReactOS straightforward. The ultimate goal of ReactOS® is to allow you to use it as alternative to Windows® without the need to change software you are used to.
Isn't there something like IBM's OS2 or something along the lines, but I'm not sure how old it is.
This one is pretty neat. Played with it for about a day on a netbook. Ran pretty well.

Didn't we have a thread almost identical to this a while back?

I have never seen one.
The only thing I could think of thats similar is the Linux chat thread.
For anyone who does recording or sound in general, it would be awesome to have an 'AvidOS' which is only used exclusively for audio, notation, and recording and other shit for sound. Would be awesome to have something like that in the studio.
Is there anything with the comptaibilty of windows but without the bloatiness and slowiness of it? I just eant fast and compatible.

What are you looking for it to be compatible with exactly?

Well Linux (which I know is off topic from this thread) depending on the distro.
I'm running Elementary OS and am running Steam and Skype and there are several replacements for things such as Libre Office and there's Wine which can be used to run windows applications though most people would rather just find an alternative.

There's ReactOS but its compatibility is rudimentary..

OS/2 died about seven years ago according to Wikipedia, from what I can gather it's heyday was in the early 90s.
Speaking of alternative operating systems, anyone know why the fuck Oracle develop Solaris? I honestly am clueless as to why.

Sun originally started it, but then Oracle bought Sun.
OS/2 was the shiiiit. Dad still has an unopened OS/2 box at home.
How about Phantom OS. Its a non UNIX like OS that treats everything like objects rather than files and its state persists across shutdowns.

Back when it was Opensolaris it was basically a testing ground for Sun software development where the community could easily get involved.
It's Unix based (just like Linux) so the biggest hurdle with swapping bits from each other around were the licensing.
But then big & bad Oracle bought out Sun and closed down Opensolaris and made all future development proprietary.

With Unix being the ultimate disaster it was, I'm thankful this didnt catch on
[editline]8th October 2013[/editline]
Specially as Plan 9 seems to just to be a more modular disaster than Unix
