I'd like some input on this: Can you live a normal, healthy life if you're gaming for at least 5 hours every day?
See, I'm trying to convince my mom that it's okay, and she's demanding sources on my statement. I need specific, detailed reports on people who are able to play for 5 hrs a day and lead happy, successful lives. Anecdotal evidence isn't going to cut it.
-Also important to keep in mind is that my current sleep schedule as of late IS messed up. I tend to wake up at 3pm and sleep at 6am. I'm trying to fix it so I'm at least getting up at 9am and in bed by 3am. Most of my gamign time takes place between those hours of 12am to 6am. Naturally, Mom hates the fact that I'm not asleep at those hours.
5H a day doesn't seem all that unusual, plenty of people do that. It's not a problem if you still do the important stuff (sleeping, eating, making money etc.)

Good luck with that
I've done way more than that and I've not had any issues in my fingers or eyes, no headaches, I've not collapsed from some insane ass cancer due to sitting :v:
Gaming, especially in moderation, I would recommend as part of a therapy program, and to surgeons looking to increase timing and dexterity, kids who are simply bored, etc.
If you can handle full time work/school schedule, friends/girlfriend, and 5 hours of gaming in a day then you are a god of time management.
No worse than watching TV 5 hours a day.

That's weird, if you've still got school/work and good friends it shouldn't matter how long you play vidya. My mom did question it once and I responded with "It's no longer than you guys watch TV."
Haven't been bothered since.

I'd say watching TV is worse
with gaming you're ACTUALLY doing something, and it ACTUALLY likely increases critical thinking skills, dexterity, reaction timing, and all that. Not only that but actually communicating most likely with other people.
much of TV will probably just dumb you down as you're not even doing any brain thinking stuffs and sitting on your ass. At least with games you're sitting on your ass + being busy.

don't quote me on credibility of these please but this should help OP. Really I'd just email her a fuckload of articles like this until she gets it.
I would immediately argue with anyone that "Healthy" amounts of gaming in any game can be a very very good thing regardless of how stupid i look because I know it's not stupid
so long as you wipe your arse, brush your teeth, bathe, eat well, and run around for an hour you're fine.
so...can you live a normal, healthy life if you're gaming for at least 5 hours every day? Yes, if you aren't an idiot and do what some people do and starve yourself or your baby because you need to play minecraft sooooo much.

I'd recommend trying to look into how much time the average american spends on "unproductive" leisurely activities such as TV. If you can convince her that 5H of entertainment a day isn't unusual, that might help your case. I'm going to assume your mom doesn't know you're an artist, but if she does, showing her some of things you've drawn could be a good way to show that you can be productive and enjoy yourself once you're off the clock.
At the worst my brother would skip school to play WoW, if you don't do that you're fine in my book.

to be fair just because others do it for longer doesn't make it OK, but if they can do that and aren't dead, then yeah
...I'm going to sit here awkwardly with (during school) 58 hours/week (~8/day)
[sp]I don't skip school or anything ever though. not having a girlfriend helps. helps with the time. not saying helps as beneficial to myself. though that may be true.[/sp]
I'm lucky if I get an hour of game time a day. And when I do it's something casual
College sucks yo
Ok let's use a schoolday as an example, say your average schoolday starts at 8:00 am and ends at 3:00 pm. Now let's say it takes you half an hour to get home, so now it's 3:30 pm, now let's say you take two hours to do your homework/study/masturbate/school stuff y'nkow. it's now 5:30pm, add five hours of gaming, it's now 10:30 pm, and let's say you go to bed at that time too. you're able to get at least nine hours of sleep which is the recommended amount, so I guess you're good Ryu-Gi!!!!!!!1
That's weird, if you've still got school/work and good friends it shouldn't matter how long you play vidya. My mom did question it once and I responded with "It's no longer than you guys watch TV."

My mom dosen't watch TV a lot, though, she prefers to listen to Religious lecture CD's.
Only 5 hours?

You're lucky that your mum listened.
My mum just responds "ITS NOT THE SAME"
Edited OP to include my sleeping habits.
EDIT: This article I found seems like something that would convince my Mom, but it says "limit to 1 hour, no more then 3 hours". It's close, but just short of an extra 2 hours.
live a normal, healthy life
Depends on what you mean. There are people who never ever leave their houses but make fortunes. Economic success doesn't really show a healthy lifestyle to aspire to.
Your sleeping habits are something you definitely need to fix, that's not healthy at all.
ok yeah what the fuck your sleeping habits are insane
So, you guys think that if I switch to waking at 9am and sleeping at maybe just past midnight would be a good change?
it's a hobby, and 5 hours a day on your hobby is hardly excessive.
as long as you're getting up and moving about and not just zoning out in one place for 5 hours straight, of course
So, you guys think that if I switch to waking at 9am and sleeping at maybe just past midnight would be a good change?
Better than what you're at now. I'd recommend going to bed more along the lines of 10:30 and waking up at 6 am. I bet if you start doing that you'll be a happier and healthier human being.
5 hours a day aren't a real problem. You can still eat, drink and sleep enough, even if you have a job.
If you sleep 8 hours and work 8 hours you have still 8 hours left.

Watching TV and playing games aren't the same things.
TV is worse because you normally move less then while playing PC, you don't have to make a tactic and there are tons of advertisement.
Gaming is better for your body and your brain then TV (but sometimes TV is better for your brain. don't miss this)
[sp]Sorry, if my english is bad :| [/sp]

My mom brought up the whole 8 8 8 hours, but according to her, it's 8 hrs sleep, 8 hours work/school, and then 8 hours of chores/errands/homework.
-I know I'm bringing up my Mom a lot. Fact is, I still live at home, and while I'm in this house, I pretty much have to follow her rules or else I move out. I can't afford a place of my own yet, so I'm stuck.
It's obvious with your sleeping schedule that you are doing absolutely nothing else with your life besides waking up and sitting on your computer, therefore I would come to the conclusion that, with you, playing games for 5 hours isn't a good thing because it allows you to stay awake a lot easier than you would otherwise.
Your mom seems to be complaining that you are doing nothing besides playing games (as if you were on a perpetual summer break), it isn't necessarily about the games, but it's about what the games have lead you to do.

You poor man
-Also important to keep in mind is that my current sleep schedule as of late IS messed up. I tend to wake up at 3pm and sleep at 6am. Your sleeping pattern is messed man, you need way more than 6 hours sleep. If you go to school/college/whatever then you probably have to be there for a specific time, make sure you're awake for that, but in bed by around 11 or midnight. That gives you about 7 hours sleep assuming you get up at 7 for college/school. If you don't, or you get up at 9, then you can be a little more relaxed, and maybe go to bed at around 1.
At the weekends, I have a horrible sleep pattern, in the friday, I don't go to sleep to sleep until about 4am on the saturday, then don't get up until around midday. You're saying you wake up at like 3pm, I'm assuming that's because you don't have a job/school/whatever, which may be one of the reasons why your mum is on your case about it anyway.
I'm in school from about 8:40 to 3:05 and I manage to fit in about 5 hours of gaming a day, and still go to bed at around 11 or midnight every day (bar weekends) so the best thing to convince her would be have an organized schedule.
I used to do it, but honestly as time has gone on I have realized I have less time to waste, and playing for more than 2-3 hours at a time is a bad habit, especially when some sessions lead me early into the morning.
The only other real consequence is getting RSI's in your fingers constantly.
I usually spend more of my time on the PC gaming, Mostly because my school bores me and doesn't offer that much to me.
Secondary school that is, since it just doesn't really have anything that I find super important(still get decent grades without learning and good when I learn for some subjects like Maths).
But as other people said, no worse then watching TV and as long you don't show the signs of addiction(skipping sleep/food and having real problems when you can't do video games).
My parents/family often think that I am addicted because I don't like to go to parties for example but I just don't like parties at all etc.
Why not try to go to sleep at a normal time, like 10pm so you can wake up at 6am? That way you can actually live a god damn life, get a job, go to college, do whatever, if you are able to maintain a healthy lifestyle, that is, a lifestyle that others would consider good, then your mom would not give a shit about whether you play games or masturbate to loli for 5 hours a day.
