Whispering singing style

So a few years back, I used to mess around with Vocaloid [url]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocaloid[/url]
I tried to made a song that makes the Vocaloid sings in 'whispering style'. It more or less worked I guess.
But is there any rules or common tips that can be used when trying to employ the whispering singing style? Or anything to make it less cringy/comfy/smooth?

Well the technology was still new at that time, and they sounds like robots. But somehow i dont hate that
